Joe Rottman HCAC All- Conference John Logan Award
Highest Grade Point Average 4 year senior athlete
Remarks: I started off the year with high hopes.
Returning six seniors from an eight man team of the year before the odds were
good that we would make a major impact in the standings of the HCAC conference.
After the fall two of our seniors decided not to participate. A third when we
entered the season wasnt motivated to do much more than show up for a match or
two. Several talented freshman helped cover the loss of the other three. We
opened the season with three wins and it looked like we were destined for a
banner year. Several teams had improved from last year and with the loss of our
number two player the night before our second conference weekend not much could
be done to salvage what would become our first losses to Franklin and Hanover
in over ten years. To say the least, I was disappointed that one person can
make that much of a difference in the outcome of two matches. It is what it is,
and hopefully I wont make the same mistake counting on just six players. We were automatically relegated to fourth
place or worse in the HCAC because of this weekend. The remainder of the season
was basically a race against the weather as I would say that this was
undoubtedly the worst spring weather that we have ever had in my 29 years of
coaching. We didnt miss a match because we were able to schedule indoors when
necessary. Enjoyed our trip south and I tend to always enjoy such events. Nice
to see Matt Rusin and Peter Wenzel develop as college players. Michael took his
serve and volley game to new heights after taking it on the chin early. Scott
Grubbs was our early leader in wins and losses and took on the roll of third
doubles master for the season. Joe Rottman and Michael Schoumacher made HCAC
Player of the Week, which is a new thing for our team as we never had this
opportunity in the SCAC. The team defeated Indiana Tech in the closest match of
the year which was great for our team as we literally outplayed the other team
down the stretch. Steven Shepson finished a second year of being Mr.Reliable in
singles and learned to play doubles this year along with LaPlante and Grubbs.
Joe Rottman became one of the few number one singles players to actually have a
winning record at Rose after four years. This is a sad goodbye to the three
seniors who have been the backbone of this team. We finished the four years two
games over .500. Only one other group can honest say that they had a four year
winning record. I must note, and keep in the records to come that Danny
LaPlante, with a severely sprained left foot managed to survive and win the
eighth and deciding game in second doubles against
