TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology clinched a winning season in men's tennis with an 8-1
victory over Greenville College in a Senior Day match at the Joy
Hulbert Tennis Center on Tuesday.
Seniors Joe Rottman (Evansville/ Castle),
Daniel LaPlante (Terre Haute) and Steve Shepson
(Redlands, Calif.) each earned victories in singles and
doubles play to lead the Engineer effort.
Rottman won at the No. 1 singles position by a
6-2, 6-1 score and teamed with freshman Michael Schoumacher
(Memphis, Tenn.) for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
LaPlante and Shepson teamed up for an 8-3 win at
No. 2 doubles. LaPlante added a three-set win at No. 2
singles, while Shepson won in straight sets at the No. 3 slot.

Other winners for the Engineers included
Schoumacher at No. 5 singles and freshman Matt Rusin (Dublin,
Ohio) at No. 6 singles. The team of freshman Peter
Wenzel (Sandy, Ore.) and Jeremy Schendel (Minneapolis,
Minn.) also won at No. 3 doubles.
Rose-Hulman improved to 10-8 overall and
caps the regular season with the Rusty Gates Invitational on
Sunday. The Engineers will play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference Tournament on April 28-29.
