CRAWFORDSVILLE, IND. - Wabash College rallied
from a 15-point second-half deficit to top Rose-Hulman Institute
of Technology 63-60 in men's basketball action on Wednesday
night.Wabash held a 61-57 lead with 13
seconds remaining, when senior Phil Sundling
(Huntington/North) buried a three-pointer to trim the
deficit to 61-60 with 4.4 seconds left.
Freshman Michael Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.)
deflected the ensuing inbounds pass into the air, but Wes
Smith leaped in traffic to claim the loose ball and was fouled
with 0.9 seconds remaining. Smith buried two free throws
to make the score 63-60.
The Engineers had one final chance, but a
full-court inbounds pass landed in the paint out of bounds under
the basket, securing the Wabash victory.
Seniors Ron George (Louisville, Ky./
Manual) and Jared Moore (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian)
led Rose-Hulman's scoring attack with 16 points each.
Moore tied a career-high in scoring with the effort and added
three blocked shots and three assists.
Senior Ross Uthoff (Crete, Ill./Illinois
Lutheran) added nine points and six rebounds, while Sundling
had seven points, eight rebounds and four assists for the
Engineers.
Wabash was paced by 22 points and 10 rebounds
from Andrew Zimmer, who buried 10 of 11 free throw attempts.
Three Little Giants added eight points each.
After an early three-pointer gave the Little
Giants a 3-0 lead, Rose-Hulman held Wabash without a point for
seven minutes to gain a 9-3 lead. Moore keyed the early
run with a three-pointer.
The Rose-Hulman lead reached 13-7 on a layup
by freshman Daniel Lowers (Ellettsville/Edgewood) and a
pair of free throws by Moore. Another Moore layup kept the
lead at seven points at 19-12 with 6:41 left in the half.
The Engineer lead reached double figures at
28-17 on a pair of free throws by Uthoff and hit a half-high 13 on a running
score in the lane by George with 1:00 left.
Rose-Hulman pushed its lead to 15 points at
39-24 on three points from Moore and a basket by George.
Wabash rallied to trim the margin to eight
points at 48-40, but a three-pointer by Kelly put Rose-Hulman
ahead by double figures again at 51-40.
The Engineers maintained an 11-point lead at
56-45 with 7:30 left in the game, before Wabash rallied with a
12-1 run to tie the score at 57-57 on a jumper by Earl Rooks
with 1:56 left.
The Little Giants gained their first lead of
the second half on two free throws by Andrew Zimmer with 41
seconds remaining to make the score 59-57. George missed a
jumper in the lane and, after an Engineer foul, Zimmer added a
pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to make the score
61-57.
Wabash improved to 2-2 on the season, while
Rose-Hulman dropped to 1-4. The Engineers host Hanover
College in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener
on Saturday at 3 p.m.
