ST. LOUIS, MO. - Fontbonne University rallied
from a seven-point deficit in the final 1:50 to earn a 66-65
victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in men's
basketball action on Tuesday night.The
rally began with five straight points from Justin Storandt to
close Rose-Hulman's lead to 65-63 with 1:02 remaining.
Both teams exchanged possessions and Fontbonne had a chance to
tie with 10 seconds remaining.
Cartez Parker drove to the basket and drew a
foul with 4.4 seconds remaining, then hit one free throw to
close the Rose-Hulman lead to 65-64. Parker missed the
second charity toss and the rebound went to the possession
arrow, which favored Fontbonne.
Storandt then scored on a layup with 1.7
seconds left to give Fontbonne the 66-65 lead. Rose-Hulman
had a final chance, however, as a full-court pass was tipped out
of bounds under the Engineer basket with 0.8 seconds left.
Sophomore Jeff McCartney (Wooster, Ohio/Triway)
narrowly rimmed out a 26-foot three-pointer as time expired
for the Griffins to claim the 66-65 victory.
The comeback dampened a balanced scoring
attack from Rose-Hulman that featured three players with 12
points and three players with eight points.
Senior Jared Moore (Indianapolis/Perry
Meridian), senior Ron George (Louisville, Ky./Manual)
and freshman Daniel Lowers (Ellettsville/Edgewood) led
Rose-Hulman with 12 points each. Lowers added his first
career double-double with 12 rebounds.
Junior Lorenzo Rice (Grandview, Mo.)
and senior Phil Sundling (Huntington/North) joined
McCartney with eight points each.
Joshua Branch led four Fontbonne players in
double figures with 16 points. Brian Fogerty scored 14 and
Stroandt joined Patrick McCoy with 11.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 29-24 halftime
lead, courtesy of 42% shooting from the field and holding the
Fontbonne offense to just 33%.
The Engineers led for much of the first 20
minutes, with their largest lead of five points coming on a
three-pointer at the first half buzzer by Lowers. The lead
fluctuated between two points in each direction for much of the
half.
Early in the second half, Rose-Hulman pushed
the lead to eight points on three occasions, highlighted by a
three-pointer from Rice with 16:54 left in the contest.
The Engineer lead reached double figures at
49-39 midway through the second half on a jumper by Lowers with
11:09 left, before Fontbonne rallied in the final minutes.
Rose-Hulman dropped to 1-2 on the season and
returns to action at Millikin University on Sunday night.
Fontbonne improved to 2-1 on the campaign.
