Rose-Hulman News Late Rally Leads Fontbonne Past Rose-Hulman 66-65

Box Score

Freshman Daniel Lowers had a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.
ST. LOUIS, MO. - Fontbonne University rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final 1:50 to earn a 66-65 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in men's basketball action on Tuesday night.

The rally began with five straight points from Justin Storandt to close Rose-Hulman's lead to 65-63 with 1:02 remaining.  Both teams exchanged possessions and Fontbonne had a chance to tie with 10 seconds remaining.

Cartez Parker drove to the basket and drew a foul with 4.4 seconds remaining, then hit one free throw to close the Rose-Hulman lead to 65-64.  Parker missed the second charity toss and the rebound went to the possession arrow, which favored Fontbonne.

Storandt then scored on a layup with 1.7 seconds left to give Fontbonne the 66-65 lead.  Rose-Hulman had a final chance, however, as a full-court pass was tipped out of bounds under the Engineer basket with 0.8 seconds left.

Sophomore Jeff McCartney (Wooster, Ohio/Triway) narrowly rimmed out a 26-foot three-pointer as time expired for the Griffins to claim the 66-65 victory.

The comeback dampened a balanced scoring attack from Rose-Hulman that featured three players with 12 points and three players with eight points.

Senior Jared Moore (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian), senior Ron George (Louisville, Ky./Manual) and freshman Daniel Lowers (Ellettsville/Edgewood) led Rose-Hulman with 12 points each.  Lowers added his first career double-double with 12 rebounds.

Junior Lorenzo Rice (Grandview, Mo.) and senior Phil Sundling (Huntington/North) joined McCartney with eight points each.

Joshua Branch led four Fontbonne players in double figures with 16 points.  Brian Fogerty scored 14 and Stroandt joined Patrick McCoy with 11.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 29-24 halftime lead, courtesy of 42% shooting from the field and holding the Fontbonne offense to just 33%.

The Engineers led for much of the first 20 minutes, with their largest lead of five points coming on a three-pointer at the first half buzzer by Lowers.  The lead fluctuated between two points in each direction for much of the half.

Early in the second half, Rose-Hulman pushed the lead to eight points on three occasions, highlighted by a three-pointer from Rice with 16:54 left in the contest.

The Engineer lead reached double figures at 49-39 midway through the second half on a jumper by Lowers with 11:09 left, before Fontbonne rallied in the final minutes.

Rose-Hulman dropped to 1-2 on the season and returns to action at Millikin University on Sunday night.  Fontbonne improved to 2-1 on the campaign.
