Solid Defense Leads DePauw Past Rose-Hulman

Box Score

David Yaraschefski scored a career-high 20 points
to lead the Rose-Hulman offense.

GREENCASTLE, IND. -- DePauw University placed three players in double figures and relied on a solid defensive effort to defeat Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 58-43 in men's college basketball action on Thursday.

Senior David Yaraschefski (Mooresville) led the Rose-Hulman offensive attack with a career-high 20 points on 10-16 from the field.

Sophomore Mike Moore led DePauw's balanced attack with 18 points.  Seniors Austin Brown and Matt McDonald each had 10 points for the Tigers.

DePauw held the Engineers to 34% from the field and earned a 36-25 rebounding advantage on the defensive end of the floor.

"David (Yaraschefski) worked really hard both offensively and defensively, and was our best player tonight.  No matter how much emphasis you put on defense, you have to score and we weren't able to do that well enough tonight," said Rose-Hulman head coach Jim Shaw.

After three early ties, Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 9-6 lead on a three-pointer by senior Jason Bednarko (Athens, Ill.) with 13:50 left in the opening half.  Yaraschefski keyed the early-game offense with three field goals.

DePauw answered with a 13-2 run over the next 10 minutes to claim a 19-11 advantage.  Freshman Grant Walthall (Carmel/Cathedral) ended the spurt with a layup at the 3:40 mark.

The two teams exchanged baskets for the last four minutes, with a field goal by junior Ron George (Louisville, Ky./Manual) bringing the Engineers within 27-17 at halftime.

Yaraschefski started the second half with Rose-Hulman's first two field goals to keep the Engineers within 32-21 with 15:35 left.  DePauw answered with the next seven points to take a 39-21 edge and gain control of the contest.

DePauw improved to 13-3 on the season, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 6-11.  The Engineers host Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Hanover College on Saturday at Hulbert Arena.
