Balanced Attack Falls Short at Transylvania

Box Score

David Yaraschefski scored 16 points on 6-6 from the field.

LEXINGTON, KY. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's balanced offensive attack fell short at defending league champion Transylvania University, as the Pioneers earned an 82-66 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Senior David Yaraschefski (Mooresville) paced four Engineers in double figures with 16 points.  Yaraschefski finished 6-6 from the field and 4-6 from the free-throw line, with six rebounds in the effort.

Senior Brian Bibb (Hoopeston, Ill.) added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Rose-Hulman.  Senior Jason Bednarko (Athens, Ill.) and freshman Jeff McCartney (Wooster, Ohio/Triway) rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 and 10 points.

Transylvania shot 51% from the field and also placed four players in double figures to secure the victory.  Tim Tierney led the way with 17 points, with Joey Verax and Joey Searle adding 16 points each.  Nick Feagan also reached double figures with 10 points on 10 free throws.

The Engineers battled Transylvania to a 38-34 deficit at halftime due to a strong first-half run.  The Pioneers jumped out to a 34-20 lead on a three-pointer by Verax at the 7:46 mark, but Rose-Hulman responded with a 16-2 run to close within 36-32 late in the half.

Bibb and junior Phil Sundling (Huntington/North) sparked the run with back-to-back three-pointers, then junior Ron George (Louisville, Ky./Manual), Bibb and Yaraschefski capped the rally with consecutive field goals.

In the second half, Transylvania opened a 17-point lead at 58-41 with a 20-7 run to start the final 20 minutes.  The Engineers whittled the deficit to 10 on two occasions but could not reach single digits down the stretch.

Transylvania improved to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in league play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 5-9 and 1-5 in conference games.  The Engineers host Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
