Late Free Throws Lead Hanover Past Rose-Hulman 72-71

Jason Bednarko led a balanced attack with a career-high 22 points.

HANOVER, IND. -- Hanover College junior Robby Brown buried a pair of free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining to lead the Panthers past Rose-Hulman 72-71 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday.

 

Brown hit a pair of free throws after receiving a pass from Clint Parker under the basket.  On the final play, Jake Inman intercepted a full-court pass to secure the win.

 

Senior Jason Bednarko (Athens, Ill.) led four Engineers in double figures with a career-high 22 points. 

 

Senior David Yaraschefski (Mooresville) added 11 points on 5-7 from the field, while junior Jared Moore (Indianapolis/ Perry Meridian) was a perfect 5-5 for 11 points.  Senior Brian Bibb (Hoopeston, Ill.) pitched in with 10 points.

 

Junior Marc O'Leary paced Hanover with 23 points, with Parker adding 15 and Brown contributing 12 for the balanced Panther attack.

 

The contest featured 16 lead changes and 12 ties, with the Engineers leading for the majority of the second half.  Rose-Hulman captured the lead at 49-46 on a three-pointer by Bednarko at the 9:53 mark.

 

Jared Moore was a perfect 5-5 from the floor for 11 points.
The Engineers maintained a lead or tie until the final 19 seconds, when Brown scored on a conventional three-point play to turn a 69-67 deficit into a 70-69 lead.  Bednarko answered with a jumper in the lane with nine seconds remaining to give Rose-Hulman a 71-70 lead and set the stage for the final possession.

Bednarko established a career-high in points by halftime, with his 15 carrying the Engineers to a 35-32 halftime lead.

Hanover relied on a 13-4 run to take a 23-15 edge on a layup by Clint Parker at the 10:03 mark.  Rose-Hulman responded with an 18-4 run over the next seven minutes to gain a 33-27 lead at the 3:39 mark.  Bednarko keyed the run with eight straight points.

Rose-Hulman dropped to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in HCAC action, while Hanover improved to 5-2 and 1-1 in league games.  The Engineers host preseason conference favorite Franklin College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hulbert Arena.
