TERRE HAUTE, IND. --
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology completed its first
winning season since 1995 and the 33rd in school history with a
34-3 victory over Manchester College in Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference college football action on Saturday
afternoon.
The Engineers finish their first year in
the HCAC with a 6-4 record, including three league victories.
Head coach Steve Englehart also becomes the first Rose-Hulman
head coach to complete a winning season in his rookie campaign
since Scott Duncan accomplished the feat in 1986.
Rose-Hulman also won its season finale for
the first time since defeated Chicago in the last game of the
1994 season.
“This is a big accomplishment for our
football program. Our seniors have definitely left a legacy for
us to build on with this winning season,” said Englehart.
Senior Cameron Hummel (Dunkirk/Jay County)
completed his fourth year as a starter with 15 completions in 27
attempts for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Justin
Meade (Middletown, Ohio) led seven receivers with at least one
catch with five receptions.
On the ground, a balanced attack featured
sophomore Bryan Wong (Warsaw/Tippecanoe Valley) with 55 rushing
yards on 12 carries and sophomore Tim Schrock (Avon) with 50

Steve Englehart led the
Engineers to a 6-4 record in his first season as Rose-Hulman
head coach. |
Defensively, junior Steve Hawkins (Casey,
Ill.) led the Engineers with 11 tackles. He added two forced
fumbles and a pair of pass breakups, while senior Mike Alto
(West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) had eight tackles and one
forced fumble. Senior Adam Helmerich (Huntingburg/Southridge)
added an interception and a blocked punt that led to a
touchdown.
“We had more motivation and enthusiasm this
week in practice than we have for most of the year. It was a
quiet bus ride and we were focused on a major goal to
accomplish. Everything came together for a big win today,”
added Englehart.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 7-0 lead with
its eighth blocked kick of the season. Helmerich blocked the
punt by Kevin Phelps at the 23-yard line, and junior Drew Sandahl (Hillsdale, Mich.)
recovered the block at the one-yard
line before jumping into the endzone for his first career
touchdown.
Manchester closed within 7-3 on the next
possession, a 68-yard march that covered seven plays. Joyan
Joyner gained 56 yards on a reserve to set up the drive, but the
Engineer defense held the Spartans out of the endzone from the
five yard-line to force a 21-yard field goal by Phelps.
Rose-Hulman increased the lead to 14-3 on
the final possession of the first quarter. The nine-play,
72-yard march featured a 34-yard pass from Hummel to senior
tight end Clint Hammes (Sheridan/Westfield) that placed the ball
on the five-yard line. Four plays later, Schrock scored from
one yard out for his sixth rushing touchdown of the season.
The Engineers added another three points to
take a 17-3 lead with 12:46 left in the first half. Junior
Jeremy Sharp (Warsaw) capped the six-play drive with a 30-yard
field goal. Hummel and Schrock connected on a 23-yard pass on
third down to keep the drive alive.
Rose-Hulman continued the onslaught with
another 30-yard field goal by Sharp at the 4:31 mark of the
first half. The kick capped a 10-play drive that covered 33
yards to give the Engineers a 20-3 advantage.
Another Rose-Hulman touchdown gave the
Engineers a 27-3 advantage with 2:27 left in the third quarter.
The 62-yard, eight-play drive ended on a 25-yard touchdown pass
from Hummel to sophomore Justin Meade (Middletown, Ohio) on
fourth down.
The Engineers added another score on the
first play of the fourth quarter. Hummel connected with a
streaking Thomas Reives (Indianapolis/Tech) on a 70-yard
touchdown strike to make the score 34-3 with 14:50 remaining in
the game.
Rose-Hulman finished the season with a 6-4
record, including a 3-4 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference games. Manchester dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in
league games.
