FRANKLIN, IND. --
Franklin College scored 21 points in the fourth quarter
to break open a 7-3 contest and earn a 28-11 victory over
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference football action on Saturday.
Senior Cameron Hummel (Dunkirk/Jay County)
came off the bench to lead the Rose-Hulman offense with 10
completions in 21 attempts for 186 yards and one touchdown.
Hummel's effort was highlighted by a 72-yard
scoring strike to sophomore Justin Meade (Middletown, Ohio)
to bring the Engineers within 14-11 early in the fourth
quarter. Meade finished the day with five catches for a
career-high 136 yards for Rose-Hulman.
Sophomore Chad Rupp finished 27-32 through the
air for 308 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Franklin
offense. Junior Tony Gregory added nine receptions for 154
yards and two touchdowns, while R.J. Hartsfield rushed for 82
yards for the Grizzlies.

The Rose-Hulman defense was led by junior
Austin Hastings (Santa Ana, Calif.) with 12 tackles,
including eight solo efforts and one sack. Seniors Drew
Lopshire (South Whitley/Whitko) and Adam Helmerich
(Huntingburg/Southridge) had eight tackles each for the
Engineers.
The opportunistic defensive unit recovered three
fumbles, with Helmerich, junior Drew Sandahl (Hillsdale,
Mich.) and sophomore Paul Spreen (Williams/Bedford N.
Lawrence) gaining the turnovers.
Franklin jumped out to a 7-0 lead on its second
possession of the game. Rupp connected with Gregory on a
42-yard strike in the middle of the endzone with 5:20 left in
the opening quarter.
The score remained unchanged until late in the
first half, when Rose-Hulman junior Jeremy Sharp (Warsaw)
booted a 31-yard field goal with six seconds left in the second
quarter. The kick capped a 12-play drive that featued a
12-yard pass from freshman Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill.)
to senior Ryan Robinson (Danville) and a 10-yard run by
junior Thomas Reives (Indianapolis/Tech) on third down.

Franklin pushed the lead to 14-3 on its first
possession of the quarter, when D.Q. Morris scored on fourth and
goal from the one-yard line to push the lead to two scores.
The Engineers answered almost immediately, as
Hummel and Meade connected on the 72-yard scoring strike with
10:57 left. A two-point conversion pass from Hummel to
Robinson brought Rose-Hulman within 14-11.
Franklin closed the scoring with a 21-yard
touchdown pass from Rupp to Danny Sears and a 17-yard scoring
strike from Rupp to Tony Gregory for the final margin of
victory.
Rose-Hulman dropped to 4-4 on the season and 1-4
in HCAC play, while Franklin improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in
league games. The Engineers host Anderson University on
Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Dad's Day Game at Cook Stadium.
