TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Defiance College remained atop the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a narrow 13-10 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the Engineer 2006 Homecoming Game on Saturday at Cook Stadium.

Joey Higgins finished 17 of 31 for 127 yards through the air to lead the Defiance offense.  Gary Allen added a 90-yard kickoff return for the team's lone touchdown.

For Rose-Hulman, freshman Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill.) completed 19 of 40 passes for 229 yards.  Senior Ryan Robinson (Danville) (80 yards) and sophomore Justin Meade (Middletown, Ohio) (79 yards) led the receiving corps with seven receptions each.

An overflow crowd filled Cook Stadium for Homcoming.

Defensively, junior Austin Hastings (Santa Ana, Calif.) led the Engineer defensive effort with 13 tackles, including nine solo efforts and a game-high five tackles-for-loss.  Junior Alex Dimoff (Stow, Ohio) and senior Drew Lopshire (South Whitley/Whitko) added eight stops each for Rose-Hulman.

Defiance jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a 22-yard field goal by senior Dan Brown with 8:09 left in the first quarter.  The Yellow Jackets took advantage of a fumble recovery on the Engineer 12-yard line to gain field position for the score.

Derek Eitel finished 19-40 for 229 yards in the narrow loss.

Rose-Hulman took a 7-3 lead with 3:08 left in the second quarter on a two-yard scoring run by sophomore Bryan Wong (Warsaw/Tippecanoe Valley).  The run capped an eight-play, 83-yard drive that featured a 32-yard pass from Eitel to sophomore Tim Schrock (Avon) and a 16-yard strike to Meade.

Defiance regained the lead with Allen's 90-yard kickoff return on the ensuing kickoff to earn a 10-7 advantage with 2:48 left in the opening half.

Rose-Hulman knotted the score at 10-10 on a 24-yard field goal by junior Jeremy Sharp (Warsaw).  The 15-play drive was highlighted by a 14-yard run by senior Mike Alto (West Chester, Ohio) on a fake punt and a 20-yard pass from Eitel to Meade.

Defiance took the lead for good at 13-10 on a 36-yard field goal by Brown with 9:45 remaining.  The Engineers reached the Defiance 26-yard line on one drive and the Yellow Jacket 48-yard line on a second drive, but could not knot the score down the stretch.

Defiance improved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 3-3 and 0-3 in league games.  The Engineers travel to Bluffton University next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
