TERRE HAUTE,
IND. -- Defiance College remained atop the Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference standings with a narrow 13-10 victory over
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the Engineer 2006
Homecoming Game on Saturday at Cook Stadium.
Joey Higgins
finished 17 of 31 for 127 yards through the air to lead the
Defiance offense. Gary Allen added a 90-yard kickoff
return for the team's lone touchdown.
For Rose-Hulman,
freshman Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill.) completed 19 of 40
passes for 229 yards. Senior Ryan Robinson (Danville)
(80 yards) and sophomore Justin Meade (Middletown, Ohio)
(79 yards) led the receiving corps with seven receptions each.

Defensively, junior
Austin Hastings (Santa Ana, Calif.) led the Engineer
defensive effort with 13 tackles, including nine solo efforts
and a game-high five tackles-for-loss. Junior Alex
Dimoff (Stow, Ohio) and senior Drew Lopshire (South
Whitley/Whitko) added eight stops each for Rose-Hulman.
Defiance jumped out
to a 3-0 lead on a 22-yard field goal by senior Dan Brown with
8:09 left in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets took
advantage of a fumble recovery on the Engineer 12-yard line to
gain field position for the score.

Rose-Hulman took a
7-3 lead with 3:08 left in the second quarter on a two-yard
scoring run by sophomore Bryan Wong (Warsaw/Tippecanoe
Valley). The run capped an eight-play, 83-yard drive
that featured a 32-yard pass from Eitel to sophomore Tim
Schrock (Avon) and a 16-yard strike to Meade.
Defiance regained
the lead with Allen's 90-yard kickoff return on the ensuing
kickoff to earn a 10-7 advantage with 2:48 left in the opening
half.
Rose-Hulman knotted
the score at 10-10 on a 24-yard field goal by junior Jeremy
Sharp (Warsaw). The 15-play drive was highlighted by a
14-yard run by senior Mike Alto (West Chester, Ohio) on a
fake punt and a 20-yard pass from Eitel to Meade.
Defiance took the
lead for good at 13-10 on a 36-yard field goal by Brown with
9:45 remaining. The Engineers reached the Defiance 26-yard
line on one drive and the Yellow Jacket 48-yard line on a second
drive, but could not knot the score down the stretch.
Defiance improved
to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman
dropped to 3-3 and 0-3 in league games. The Engineers
travel to Bluffton University next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
