Box Score

Derek Eitel led the Engineer offense, passing 29 for 48 on 255 yards and a touchdown.

HANOVER, IND. -- Hanover College relied on three touchdowns in each half to defeat Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 41-8 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football action on Saturday at L.S. Ayres Field.

Senior Rick Webster finished 9-15 through the air for 187 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hanover offense.  Freshman Alex Kiel was 13-17 for 123 yards and one score for the Panthers.  Bobby Smart led Hanover receivers with seven receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

For Rose-Hulman, freshman Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill.) led the offense with career highs of 29 completions in 48 attempts for 255 yards and one touchdown.  Sophomore Nate Richter (Zionsville) paced the Engineers with eight receptions for 89 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore Justin Meade (Middletown, Ohio) showed his versatility with six catches for 55 yards and a team-high 26 yards rushing on seven carries.

"We made too many penalties and mistakes today.  We gave ourselves a couple of opportunities with blocked punts, but we have to do a better job in the red zone," said Rose-Hulman head coach Steve Englehart.

Linebackers Coach David Denham congratulates the defense after a safety gave the Engineers their first score of the day.

Defensively, senior Mike Alto (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) led the Engineers with nine tackles, including six solo efforts.  Junior Austin Hastings (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) added a team-high three tackles-for-loss for Rose-Hulman.

"They made several plays at the wide receiver position and made several long runs.  They just made more big plays than we were able to today," said Englehart.

Rose-Hulman marched 53 yards on 11 plays on its first drive before turning the ball over on downs on the Hanover 29-yard line.  The Panthers marched 14 plays on their opening drive, taking a 7-0 lead on a two-yard scoring run by Chan Nelson with 4:16 left in the first quarter.

Hanover increased the lead to 14-0 on a 44-yard scoring strike from Kiel to Bobby Smart with three seconds left in the first quarter.

Rose-Hulman had another opportunity to score after junior Drew Sandahl (Hillsdale, Mich.) blocked a punt that the Engineers recovered on the 22-yard line.  Hanover held the Engineers without a first down to keep the score at 14-0.

Tim Schrock gave the Engineers field position with excellent kickoff returns.

Rose-Hulman relied on a safety to dent the scoreboard and closed within 14-2.  The second blocked punt of the day, this time by senior Adam Helmerich (Huntingburg/ Southridge) through the endzone for two points.

Hanover closed the first half scoring with a 54-yard, four-play drive late in the first half.  Webster connected with Tyler Rump on a 24-yard touchdown strike with 1:51 left in the half.

Hanover increased its lead to 28-2 midway through the third quarter with a six-play, 43-yard march.  Corey Fogle capped the drive with a 19-yard scoring run over the left side.

Rose-Hulman scored its first touchdown of the day on a nine-play drive on the next possession.  Eitel connected with Richter on a five-yard scoring strike, after hitting senior Ryan Robinson (Danville) on a 23-yard pass earlier in the drive.

Hanover added another score on an electrifying 40-yard touchdown pass.  The play began as a sweep to Fogle, followed with a lateral to C.J. Karpiak and a cross-field lateral to Webster.  The quarterback then launched a 40-yard scoring strike to Dustin Stewart.

The Panthers increased the lead to 41-8 on an 18-yard scoring strike from Webster to Smart with 10:44 left in the fourth quarter.

Hanover improved to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in league matchups.  The Engineers host Defiance College in the annual Homecoming game next Saturday at 2 p.m.
