Rose-Hulman Battles but Falls 20-9 to Defending HCAC Champion Mt. St. Joseph

Box Score

Mike Alto makes one of his team-high 11 tackles on the night.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled two time defending Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Mount St. Joseph for a full 60 minutes before falling 20-9 to the nationally ranked Lions on Saturday night at Cook Stadium.

Mike Lovell led the Mount St. Joseph with 162 yards and two touchdowns rushing, but the Engineer defense limited quarterback Rashon Lewis to a combined 84 yards rushing and passing in the contest.

Senior Mike Alto (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) paced Rose-Hulman's defensive effort with 11 tackles, including nine solo efforts and 3.5 tackles-for-loss.  Seniors Drew Lopshire (South Whitley) and Tim Wilson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added 10 stops each.

Cameron Hummel returned to the lineup and passed for 150 yards and one touchdown.

Senior Cameron Hummel (Dunkirk/Jay County) finished 14-27 for 150 yards with one touchdown through the air to lead the Engineer offense.  Sophomore Tim Schrock (Avon) led the ground attack with 29 yards on seven attempts.

The receiving corps came up with several plays to keep drives alive.  Sophomores Nate Richter (Zionsville) and Justin Meade (Middletown, Ohio) had three receptions each to lead the effort.  Junior Jared Moore (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) added two catches, including a 25-yard touchdown on a fourth down play in the third quarter.

Mount St. Joseph relied on a solid ground attack to earn a 20-0 halftime lead.  Lovell scored five minutes into the game on a 62-yard scoring scamper, and Lewis rushed 14 yards for a second touchdown to make the lead 14-0.  A third touchdown with 1:00 left in the opening half on a two-yard Lovell run made the score 20-0 at the break.

Alex Dimoff returned this first half interception to set up a potential Rose-Hulman scoring chance.

Rose-Hulman dictated play for much of the second half, outscoring the defending league champions 9-0 and outgaining the Lions by nearly 100 yards in the final 30 minutes.

The Engineers opened the second half scoring on a fourth down scoring pass from Hummel to Moore of 25 yards with 2:45 left in the third quarter.

Rose-Hulman later added a safety when Mount St. Joseph took an intentional play out of the endzone on a punt that gave the Engineers possession.

Mount St. Joseph improved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 1-1 and 0-1 in league games.  The Engineers host Concordia University Chicago next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Cook Stadium.
