TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Heidelberg
College scored one run in the ninth inning to break a scoreless tie
against the College of Wooster and advance to the championship game
of the NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional on Friday.
Everett Thomas tossed the
complete game two-hitter on the mound to move to 8-1 for the Student
Princes. He struck out three and pitched around four walks in
a 121-pitch effort.
Adam Samson earned the loss in
a well pitched second complete game of the tournament. Samson
scattered seven hits and allowed only the ninth inning run with five
strikeouts to finish the season with a 7-3 record.
Heidelberg opened the bottom
of the ninth with a single to the shortstop by Jason Lash.
Matt Grassley sacrificed Lash to second base and, after an
intentional walk, the winning run scored on an infield single by
Steve Decker.
Jeremy Wentworth led the
Student Princes with three singles, while Grassley had a double for
the winners. Jake Sankal and Stu Beath slapped singles for
Wooster.
Heidelberg advanced to the
NCAA Division III Mideast Regional title round against Adrian
College at noon on Saturday. Wooster completed the season with
a 36-11 record and won the North Coast Athletic Conference Eastern
Division title.
