Heidelberg Battles Through the Rain to Top Calvin

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Heidelberg College relied on a combined six-hitter by pitchers Andrew McFarland and Andy Lowe to defeat Calvin College 4-1 through a steady rain in the NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional at Rose-Hulman on Thursday afternoon.

McFarland pitched 6 1/3 innings of one run baseball, scattering three hits and four walks with three strikeouts in his seventh win of the season.  Lowe closed the game with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for his eighth save.

Offensively, Gar Keen and Cody James each had three hits to lead the Student Princes effort.  Keen finished with three singles, one run and one RBI, while James had three singles and one RBI.

Calvin scored one run in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 1-1 to force a pitcher's duel.  Chris Blacklidge and Brad Brummel led the Knights offense with two hits each, with Blacklidge scoring one run.

Kyle Cousins tossed a strong game for Calvin in a losing effort.  The left-hander allowed just two runs and nine hits in seven innings of work with six strikeouts to finish the season with a 7-2 mark.

Heidelberg improved to 39-8 on the season and 2-0 in the NCAA Mideast Regional.  The Student Princes return to action on Friday against the winner of tonight's game between Rose-Hulman and Adrian.

Calvin completed its season with a 32-10 record and earned the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season championship.
