TERRE HAUTE, IND. –
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology earned its first NCAA Division
III Baseball Tournament victory in school history with a 4-0 victory
over Calvin College in game three of the Mideast Regional on
Wednesday.
Derek Eitel tossed a
three-hitter in the second shutout of his college career that
featured a career-high 13 strikeouts. Eitel pitched around
five walks to improve to 9-3 on the season.
Offensively, Michael Matsui
slapped a pair of two-run singles to provide all four RBIs in the
victory. Andrew Bilse and Gabe Focke contributed three hits
each, including one double.
The Calvin offense featured
singles by Kyle Fletcher, Jason May and Drew Johnson. The
Knights loaded the bases in the ninth inning, before Eitel ended the
game with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Engineers earned their
first NCAA Tournament victory in their third Regional appearance.
Rose-Hulman is serving as host for the Mideast Regional for the
third time in the last four years.
Rose-Hulman stands 32-13 on
the season and returns to action at 7 p.m. on Thursday against Adrian
College. Calvin dropped to 32-9 and will square off against
Heidelberg College at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
