TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology will receive the No. 3 seed in the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament after falling
5-3 at Transylvania University on Sunday.
Transylvania captured the No. 4 seed in the
tourney with Sunday's victory. The College of Mount St.
Joseph will host the tournament as the event's top seed, with
No. 2 Franklin College rounding out the field.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. Sophomore
Tim Tepe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and sophomore Kirk
Thompson (Harrisburg, Ill.) reached base on consecutive
errors for the first run, and senior Gabe Focke (St.
Leon/East Central) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Thompson
with the second run of the frame.
Transylvania answered back with five runs in the
eighth inning to take a 5-2 lead. An RBI double by Ben
Young and a two-run double by Jerrod Long turned a 2-2 tie into
the Pioneer lead.
Rose-Hulman scored once in the ninth, courtesy of
a double by sophomore Andrew Bilse (Munster) and a
sacrifice fly by sophomore Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill.).
Brent Roach finished the ninth inning for his fifth save of the
season.
Tepe led the Engineers with two singles and one
run scored, while Thompson had one hit and one RBI.
Sophomore Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill.) tossed a strong 7
1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts, to
earn a no-decision.
Rose-Hulman stands 28-11 overall and will square
off with Franklin on Thursday in the Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by the College of Mount
St. Joseph. The start time and specific location will be
confirmed and released on Monday.
