LEXINGTON, KY. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology earned a doubleheader split against Transylvania
University to set the stage for a critical Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference game on Sunday.
The Engineers won the opener by a 16-2 count
behind a 20-hit effort. Transylvania bounced back for a
5-3 victory in the nightcap.
Rose-Hulman can still secure the top seed and
hosting rights for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
baseball tournament with a victory over Transylvania in Sunday's
noon game.
Transylvania must either defeat the Engineers on
Sunday or have Bluffton defeat Anderson in their Sunday matinee
to qualify for the HCAC Tournament.
In the opener, sophomore Tim Tepe (Cincinnati,
Ohio/Elder) paced the Engineer offense with four hits,
including two doubles, with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Junior Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill.),
sophomore Keenan Long (Park Ridge, Ill./Northwestern
University), sophomore Troy Eveslage (Ramsey/North
Harrison) and senior Alex Decker (Seymour) each added
two hits for Rose-Hulman. Kent scored three runs and drove
home two, Long had three RBIs with two runs scored, Eveslage had
one run and one RBI and Decker scored twice with one run batted
in.
The Engineers pounded four Transylvania pitchers
for 20 hits and scores of four runs in the first, three in the
fourth, five in the fifth and four in the seventh in the game
one win.
Senior Michael Matsui (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield
South) improved to 9-1 on the season with the complete game
victory. Matsui scattered eight hits with two walks and
two strikeouts to lower his earned run average to a conference
best 1.89.
In the nightcap, Transylvania scored single runs
in the seventh and eighth innings to top the Engineers 5-3.
Rose-Hulman rallied to tie the score at 3-3 with a solo score in
the seventh inning.
Sophomore Andrew Bilse (Munster) slapped
four hits, including a double, to lead the Engineer offense in
game two. Matsui added a pair of singles for Rose-Hulman.
Rose-Hulman stands 28-10 overall and 15-5 in HCAC
play, while Transylvania has a mark of 27-10 and a league
standing of 14-7 entering Sunday's single game.
