TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman baseball
team completed a weekend sweep of visiting Hanover College
earning a pair of wins on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The Engineer seniors had a big impact on the
outcome of Saturday's ballgames, as the pitching efforts of
senior Luis Bougrat (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy)
led Rose-Hulman to victory in the opener.
Bougrat tossed a complete game giving up
only one run while scattering six hits and striking out five to
improve his record to 5-1 on the season.
Seniors Michael Matsui (Joliet,
Ill./Plainfield South) and Joe Valerioti (Houston,
Texas/Clear Brook) also contributed to the winning efforts.
Matsui finished the afternoon with a pair of
hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Valerioti got the start in the
nightcap and threw
4.1 strong innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits.
The opener was a pitcher's duel as Hanover
starter Nik Kahl went the distance allowing only five hits and
no earned runs in the losing effort.
The Panthers scored their lone run in the top of
the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Engineers answered with
a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Tim
Tepe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) delivered a two-run single
that scored sophomores Keenan Long (Park Ridge,
Ill./Northwestern Univ.) and Andrew Bilse (Munster).
Bougrat shut down the Hanover hitters in the top
of the seventh inning to preserve the Rose-Hulman win and earn
the pitching victory.
In the nightcap, the Engineers jumped out to an
early 6-0 lead, capitalizing on a pair of fielding errors by the
Panthers, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the second and
adding another in the third.
Hanover answered with a run in the fourth and
four more in the fifth to close the margin to 6-5. The
Engineers then added an insurance run in the seventh and two
more in the eighth to earn the victory.
Sophomore Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill.)
and freshman Michael Kovacs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller)
each drove in a pair of runs for the Engineers in the nightcap.
Senior Gabe Focke (St. Leon, Ind./East Central),
sophomore Nathanael Miles (Indianapolis/Warren Central),
and Matsui each added an RBI in the second game to contribute to
the offensive efforts.
The Engineer bullpen stood strong allowing just
one earned run over the final 4.2 innings as freshman Gannon
Sadzeck (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) tossed 2.0 innings in
relief allowing an earned run on four hits before senior Sam
Deters (Teutopolis, Ill.) and sophomore Derek Eitel
(Marshall, Ill.) combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless ball
allowing only one hit and striking out five.
The victories improved Rose-Hulman to 26-9 on the
season and 13-4 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
play. The Engineers have now won 12 of their last 14
ballgames and find themselves atop of the HCAC standings after
losses by Transylvania and Mt. St. Joseph.
Rose-Hulman will return to action on Tuesday
night when they host HCAC opponent Anderson University at 6 pm.
