DEFIANCE, OHIO -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology completed a three-game baseball sweep at Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Defiance College with 12-0 and 13-1 victories on Saturday.

The Engineers scored in six of the game's seven innings and relied on a combined two-hit shutout on the mound in game one.  The opener was shortened to five innings due to rain and lightning in a game that featured an eight-run fifth frame.

In game one, senior Michael Matsui (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) and sophomore Ben Stenger (Brookville/Franklin County) combined on a two-hit shutout on the mound in the Engineer victory. 

Matsui allowed no runs and just two hits with five strikeouts in six innings to improve to 7-1 on the year.  Stenger pitched a hitless seventh and struck out a pair.

Offensively, Rose-Hulman pounded out 13 hits and broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning rally.  Sophomore Keenan Long (Park Ridge, Ill./Northwestern University) led the offense with a three-run home run, with sophomore Tim Tepe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) smashing two doubles and scoring three runs.

Other key contribtors to the offense included senior Gabe Focke (St. Leon/East Central) with a single, double, triple and three runs scored; sophomore Kreigh Williams (Ossian/Norwell) with two singles, three RBIs and one run scored; and junior Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill.) with a pair of singles.

With storm clouds moving in during game two, Rose-Hulman scored eight times in what turned out to be the final inning of play to gain the 13-1 victory.  Senior Luis Bougrat (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy) threw just 75 pitches in his complete game effort that featured four singles and just one run allowed.  The reigning league Pitcher of the Week moved to 4-1 on the season with the victory.

The Engineer offense was again the story, with five of the top six batters in the order recording multiple hit games.  Tepe smashed three singles, scored twice and had a pair of RBIs to pace the balanced effort.  Focke added two doubles and three RBIs.

Sophomore Andrew Bilse (Munster) contributed a single and double, scored twice and drove home two runs.  Kent added two singles, two RBIs and two runs scored, with Matsui smashing a pair of singles with one run and one RBI.  Long added a double and a pair of runs batted in.

Rose-Hulman improved to 22-9 overall and 9-4 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the victories, while Defiance dropped to 5-19 and 1-14 in league games.  The Engineers return to action with a key nine-inning game at Franklin College on Tuesday afternoon.
