INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology relied on a pair of huge offensive innings to defeat
nationally ranked Anderson University 16-2 at Victory Field in
Indianapolis on Tuesday night.
Rose-Hulman broke the game open with a seven-run
fifth inning rally to earn their 18th victory of the season.
The Engineers then scored six times in the seventh inning to top
a Ravens team ranked No. 28 nationally in this week's NCAA
Division III coaches poll.
Sophomore Troy Eveslage (Ramsey/North
Harrison) opened the frame with a double and advanced to
third when sophomore Andrew Bilse (Munster) reached base
on a fielding error. Sophomore Chandler Kent (Antioch,
Ill.) slapped a single to give the Engineers a 3-0 lead and
their first run of the rally.
Sophomore Keenan Long (Park Ridge,
Ill./Northwestern University) and sophomore Tim Tepe
(Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) slapped back-to-back singles for
the second and third runs of the frame. Sophomore Kirk
Thompson (Harrisburg, Ill.) provided the key hit of the
inning with a two-run double to make the score 7-0.
A two-base hit by senior Gabe Focke (St.
Leon/East Central) added the eighth run of the game, and
Eveslage capped the rally with another single to make the score
9-0.
Earlier in the game, Long drove home the first
run of the contest with an RBI ground out in the first frame.
Freshman Michael Kovacs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) added
the second run of the game with an RBI single that scored Focke
in the fourth inning.
Rose-Hulman secured the victory with a six-run
seventh inning spurt. Kovacs opened the rally on a single
and scored on a triple by Focke. Long and Tepe added
two-run doubles later in the frame and Focke scored on a wild
pitch for the game's 15th run.
Kent and Tepe smashed four hits each to lead the
Rose-Hulman offense. Tepe smashed two doubles with two
runs scored and three RBIs, while Kent scored twice and had two
RBIs.
Kovacs and Eveslage added three hits each,
including a double. Focke pitched in with a double, a
triple, three runs and two RBIs as part of the 19-hit
Rose-Hulman attack.
On the mound, senior Michael Matsui (Joliet,
Ill./Plainfield South) improved to 6-1 on the season with a
strong six inning performance. Matsui scattered seven hits
with no walks and five strikeouts in the effort.
The Engineers improved to 18-8 on the season and
5-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the
victory. Anderson dropped to 16-8 overall and 6-2 in
conference games. Rose-Hulman hosts the College of Mount
St. Joseph in a three-game series at Art Nehf Field beginning
with a doubleheader on Friday night.
