Michael Matsui allowed just three runs in eight strong innings on the mound.

BOX SCORE

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Illinois Wesleyan University preseason All-American pitcher Matt Aronson tossed eight strong innings to lead the visitors to a 6-1 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in college baseball action on Friday.

Aronson scattered five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in his first start of the 2008 season.  He was selected a first-team preseason All-American by d3baseball.com.

Rose-Hulman senior Michael Matsui (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) matched Aronson with a solid effort of his own.  Matsui scattered 10 hits and allowed single runs in the third, fourth and eighth innings to keep the Engineers within striking distance.  He also tallied five strikeouts in the effort.

Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before the Engineers scored their lone run in the eighth inning.  Sophomore Keenan Long (Park Ridge, Ill./Northwestern U.) slapped a single to start the rally and sophomore Tim Tepe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) smashed a triple to right field to plate Long with the Engineer run.

Rose-Hulman dropped to 8-4 on the season, while Illinois Wesleyan stands 1-1 overall.  The Engineers square off with Illinois Wesleyan at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Adrian College at 4 p.m. on Saturday in day two of the Rose-Hulman Invitational.
