TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology improved to 8-3 on the baseball season with a 7-2 and 2-1 doubleheader sweep over Earlham College in the 2008 home opener on Wednesday.

Rose-Hulman relied on a balanced team effort to claim a 7-2 victory in the opener.  The Engineers slapped 10 hits in the contest and relied on five shutout innings from sophomore Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill.) to earn the win.

Sophomore Keenan Long (Park Ridge, Ill./Northwestern U.) led the offensive effort with two hits and one run, including a double.  Sophomore Nathaniel Miles (Indianapolis/ Warren Central) added three RBIs, including a two-run single as part of a four-run third inning.

Eitel allowed just two hits in his five shutout innings with three strikeouts and two walks to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Kirk Thompson beat this throw home in the opener.

Other key contributors to the offense included senior Michael Matsui (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) and sophomore Kirk Thompson (Harrisburg, Ill.) with two runs scored each.

In the nightcap, seniors Luis Bougrat (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy) and Sam Deters (Teutopolis, Ill.) combined on a six-hitter in the 2-1 victory.

Bougrat tossed the first five innings and scattered six hits with three strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season.  Deters closed the game with four strikeouts in two innings for his third save of the season and the school record 14th of his career.

Thompson paced the offense with an RBI triple and scored one run.  Freshman Michael Kovacs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) added an RBI single, and senior Alex Decker (Seymour) slapped a triple for the Engineer attack.

Rose-Hulman stands 8-3 on the season, while Earlham has a 2-4 mark on the campaign.  The Engineers host Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday as part of the Rose-Hulman Invitational.
