LEESBURG, FLA. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology tied a school record with 15 runs in the third inning to secure a doubleheader split against St. Vincent College on Monday.

The Engineers broke open a scoreless third inning tie in the nightcap on a 15-run inning that featured two grand slams.  Rose-Hulman previously scored 15 runs in an inning during a win over Ohio Northern in 2002.

Rose-Hulman won the second game by a 19-4 margin, after falling 9-2 in the opener.

Sophomores Kirk Thompson (Harrisburg, Ill.) and Tim Tepe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) provided the offensive thunder with grand slams in the 15-run third frame.  The Engineers pounded out six total hits in the inning and took advantage of seven walks, three hit batsmen and two fielding errors in the effort.

In addition to the two grand slams, junior Andrew Pinkstaff (Vincennes/Lincoln) added a two-run single and sophomore Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill.) also tallied an RBI with a single.

For the contest, Tepe finished 3-5 with two doubles and his home run, three runs scored and five RBIs.  Thompson scored two runs with four RBIs, with sophomore Andrew Bilse (Munster), Pinkstaff and Kent scoring twice each.

Senior Michael Matsui (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet South) picked up the pitching victory by allowing just one earned run in five innings of work.  Matsui scattered six hits and one walk with three strikeouts for his 12th career win.

In the opener, Bilse led the Engineer offense with a 3-3 effort that included his first career home run.  He also scored two runs and had one RBI.  Sophomores Keenan Long (Park Ridge, Ill./Northwestern University) and Thompson contributed two singles each.

St. Vincent opened up the margin with eight runs on eight hits in the third inning.  Abe Weimer led the St. Vincent offense with three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.

Rose-Hulman stands 2-1 on the season and returns to action with a single game against Emory and Henry College on Tuesday.
