AMELIA, OHIO - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was knocked out of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament contention and completed its season with a doubleheader split at Mount St. Joseph on Saturday.

The Lions topped Rose-Hulman 8-4 in the opener, before the Engineers rallied to win by a 5-4 decision in the nightcap.

The Engineers completed their 16th winning season in the past 17 years under head coach Jeff Jenkins.  Rose-Hulman finished 21-18 overall and fifth in its first HCAC season with a 12-10 mark.

The game also marked the final contest for 11 seniors in the Engineer program that combined for 105 wins over the past four years.

In the opener, Mount St. Joseph relied on six consecutive singles to score six times in the second inning and help the Lions jump out to an 8-0 lead.

Rose-Hulman rebounded with a pair of runs in the fourth frame.  Freshman Andrew Bilse (Munster) opened the frame with a walk and advanced on a single by senior Matt Salisbury (Fort Wayne/Homestead), before senior Kellen Hurst (Noblesville) drove home both runners with a two-out single.

The Engineers added another two runs in the fifth inning.  Sophomore Alex Decker (Seymour) opened the rally with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error.  Senior Steven Sawusch (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook South) drove home one run with a single and Salisbury added a sacrifice fly.

Salisbury finished 2-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI, and has become the all-time leader in runs scored at Rose-Hulman with his efforts this weekend.  Hurst added two RBIs on his single.

In the nightcap, senior Sam Deters (Teutopolis, Ill.) extended his single-season school record with his sixth save and sophomore Andrew Pinkstaff (Vincennes/Lincoln) slapped four singles to lead Rose-Hulman to the 5-4 victory.

Other key contributors to the 15-hit attack included senior Tim Braun (Evergreen Park, Ill.) with three singles and one RBI; senior Josh Nash (Elizabethtown, Ky./Central Hardin) with two hits and one run scored; Salisbury with two hits, two runs and one RBI; and Hurst with two hits and one RBI.

The Engineers turned a 1-0 deficit into a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with one score.  Pinkstaff opened the rally with a single, and freshman Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill.) added a hit of his own, and Braun brought home the tying run with another single.

Rose-Hulman captured a 3-2 lead with five singles in a two-run sixth inning rally.  Nash, Pinkstaff, Salisbury, Braun and Hurst combined on the hits to give the Engineers their first lead of the day.

The Engineers increased their edge to 4-2 in the seventh inning with consecutive singles by Nash and Pinkstaff to score senior Adam Knaack (McHenry, Ill./West).

After Mount St. Joseph tied the score at 4-4, Rose-Hulman scored again in the eighth frame.  Salisbury, Hurst and freshman Kirk Thompson (Harrisburg, Ill.) each hit singles, then senior Matt Pepelea (Terre Haute/South) brought home Salisbury with a sacrifice fly.

Mount St. Joseph stands 30-9 on the season and 15-7 in league play to earn the No. 2 seed at the upcoming HCAC Tournament.
