Rose-Hulman News Salisbury Records Not Enough as Engineers Fall to Anderson

Box Score

Matt Salisbury became Rose-Hulman's all-time leader
in hits on this swing to lead the Engineer offense.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Matt Salisbury (Fort Wayne/ Homestead) became a part of Engineer history in two categories, but Anderson University earned a dramatic 8-6 extra inning victory at Art Nehf Field on Tuesday.

Salisbury set a career school record for hits and tied the Engineer mark for runs scored.  Salisbury slapped a fourth-inning single for his 187th career hit to pass the record established by 2002 graduate Cort Severns.  In the sixth inning, he scored career run number 146 to tie a mark set by Matt Moore in 2004.

Ryne Foster blasted a three-run home run with two outs in the 11th inning to snap a 5-5 tie and give the Ravens the dramatic victory.

Rose-Hulman rallied from a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the sixth inning to close within 3-2.  Freshman Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill.) opened the rally with a single and advanced to third on a double by Salisbury.

Chandler Kent ends an Anderson rally with a force out at third.

Senior Tim Braun (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) brought home one run with a single and senior Kellen Hurst (Noblesville) added the second RBI with a sacrifice fly.

After Anderson built a 5-2 advantage, Rose-Hulman relied on another two-run rally to close within 5-4 in the eighth.  Braun opened the rally with a double and scored on a single and error off the bat of Hurst.  An RBI ground out by Matsui scored Hurst with the second run.

The Engineers tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Braun to score junior Gabe Focke (St. Leon/East Central) with the tying run to set the stage for extra innings.

On the evening, Salisbury led the Engineer attack with two hits, including his school record 56th career double, and one RBI.  Braun added two hits with a double, one run scored and one RBI.

Anderson improved to 19-16 overall and 12-7 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 20-16 and 11-8 in league games.  The Engineers travel to Mount St. Joseph on Friday for a critical three-game series if Rose-Hulman hopes to qualify for the HCAC Tournament.
