BLUFFTON, OHIO –
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology completed a three-game baseball sweep over
Bluffton University with a narrow 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Rose-Hulman freshman Derek
Eitel (Marshall, Ill.) outdueled Bluffton counterpart Tim Kay in a pair of
nine-inning complete game efforts. Eitel scattered 11 hits but recorded
just one walk with five strikeouts to move to 3-2 on the season.
Kay was equally strong but was
let down by five Bluffton fielding errors. He tossed a complete game
four-hitter and allowed no earned runs, but two seventh-inning runs for the
Engineers proved to be the difference.
Bluffton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, courtesy of singles
from Tony Moore, Kay and Curtis Schroeder. Eitel forced Cody McPherson
into a double play to end the threat.
Rose-Hulman scored both of its runs in the seventh inning. Senior
Matt Salisbury (Fort Wayne/Homestead) reached base on a throwing error and
scored the tying run on a single by senior Kellen Hurst (Noblesville).
Senior Jimmy Murray (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) drove home Hurst
with the winning run on a sacrifice fly.
Hurst and Murray led the Engineers with one single and one RBI each.
Senior Tim Braun (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) and freshman Tim Tepe
(Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) also had singles for Rose-Hulman.
The Engineers improved to 17-10 overall
and 10-4 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Bluffton
dropped to 1-8 overall and 1-7 in league play. Rose-Hulman returns to
action with a Tuesday league matchup at Franklin College. |
