Lead Engineers to Victory Field Win

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on solid hitting and a complete game effort on the mound by freshman Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill.) to earn a  6-2 win over Anderson at Victory Field on Monday night.

Eitel tossed his first career complete game with a career-high 12 strikeouts to move to 2-1 on the season.  He scattered 12 hits but surrendered no walks and just one earned run.

Offensively, junior Michael Matsui (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South), senior Matt Salisbury (Fort Wayne/ Homestead), and senior Kellen Hurst (Noblesville) led a 10-hit attack with a pair of hits.  Matsui had one run, two RBIs and a double, and Hurst scored twice with a double.

The Engineers and Ravens battled in beautiful Victory Field.

Rose-Hulman scored in the first, second and third innings to jump out to a 5-0 lead. 

In the opening frame, Matsui drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by senior Matt Pepelea (Terre Haute/South).  Salisbury added another walk to load the bases, then Matsui scored on a sacrifice fly by Hurst.

In the second frame, senior Jimmy Murray (Gahanna, Ohio) slapped a single and advanced to second on a walk to freshman Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill.).  Matsui then drove home both runners with a double to left field.

In the third, Rose-Hulman again scored twice to take a 5-0 advantage.  Salisbury and Hurst opened the inning with singles, then junior Adam Knaack (McHenry, Ill./West) slapped a double to score Salisbury.  Senior Tim Braun (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) capped the frame with a sacrifice fly to score Hurst.

The duo of Hurst and Braun teamed up again in the fourth to put the Engineers ahead 6-0.  Hurst slapped a double to open the frame, then Braun hit another sacrifice fly to give Rose-Hulman another score.

Rose-Hulman improved to 12-8 on the season and 6-2 in HCAC play, while Anderson dropped to 7-12 on the campaign and 2-5 in league games.  The Engineers host Defiance College in a three-game league series starting Friday.
