TERRE HAUTE, IND. –
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology placed three players on the all-Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball team, highlighted by a pair of
first-team honorees, in results released today.
Seniors Kellen
Hurst (Noblesville) and Matt
Salisbury (Fort Wayne/Homestead) captured first-team all-conference honors,
while junior Sam Deters (Teutopolis, Ill.) earned second-team
recognition.
In addition, senior
Adam Knaack (McHenry, Ill./West) and freshman Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill.)
were named honorable mention all-league.
Hurst batted .345
with 49 hits, 32 RBIs and 27 runs scored while appearing in all 39 Rose-Hulman
games this season. The right fielder also had a fielding percentage of
.985 with just one error and ranked sixth on the Engineer single-season list
with 13 stolen bases.

Matt Salisbury holds
career school records for hits (194),
runs scored (150), doubles (57) and walks (100). |
In his career, Hurst
slapped 108 hits with 15 doubles, four home runs and three triples, and ranks
fourth on the school's career lists for stolen bases (29) and fielding
percentage (.984).
Salisbury tallied a
.370 batting average as a designated hitter in 2007, despite playing the entire
season with a torn tendon in his elbow. He smashed 13 doubles and three
home runs, scored 30 times and drove home 24 runs in 32 contests.
In his career,
Salisbury ranks in the Engineer all-time top 10 in 11 offensive categories.
His career school records include 194 hits, 150 runs scored, 57 doubles and 100
walks. He also batted .376 in his career with 12 home runs and seven
pitching saves.
Deters finished 3-1
with a 1.54 earned run average as Rose-Hulman's closer. The right-hander
tossed 23.1 innings, allowing 18 hits with 25 strikeouts and just four earned
runs allowed.

Sam Deters had a
single-season school record six saves
to increase his all-time total to 11. |
He recorded a school
record with six saves this season to increase his own career school record to
11. Deters held the opposition to a .212 batting average and set a school
record with 20 appearances this season.
Kent entered the
Engineer lineup as the starting third baseman as a freshman, batting .318 with
41 hits, 28 runs scored and nine doubles. He added five stolen bases and
started 34 games at third base for Rose-Hulman.
Knaack completed a
third year as the team's primary starting catcher with a .223 batting average,
25 hits and seven doubles. His efforts included a ninth-inning home run
against Franklin and career totals of 70 hits, 14 doubles and 46 runs scored.
Rose-Hulman finished
21-18 overall and 12-10 in HCAC play for fifth place in 2007. The
Engineers have tallied winning seasons for 16 of the past 17 years under head
coach Jeff Jenkins. |
