TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Marietta College remained undefeated in the NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional with a 10-5 victory over Elizabethtown College on Thursday. Marietta withstood a three-hour rain delay and relied on a balanced offensive attack in the victory. Chris Hendricks slapped three hits and scored two runs, while Tony Piconke and Justin Steranka had two hits each for the Pioneers. Mike DeMark improved to 7-1 on the season with five innings of work, allowing four hits. Jason Baumler picked up his first save with four scoreless innings of relief. Mike Donahue paced the Elizabethtown offense with two hits, while Tom Semanek blasted a two-run home run. Bryan Torresani added a single and one run scored. Marietta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, before the game was delayed three hours by a severe thunderstorm that produced hail. Elizabethtown closed within 2-1 after three innings, before the Pioneers scored four times in the fourth inning. Steranka opened the frame with a double, before Tom Doty walked. With one out, Ryan Belanger walked to load the bases. An error on a fielder's choice plated two runs, then a double by Hendricks capped the rally. Elizabethtown scored twice in the fourth and twice in the sixth to close within 8-5, before the pitching of Baumler shut down the Blue Jay offense to secure the outcome. Marietta improved to 37-10 on the season and squares off with Manchester on Friday at noon. Elizabethtown dropped to 26-15-1 and plays against Adrian on Friday at 9 a.m. |
