TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Otterbein College scored five times in the ninth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and earn a 7-2 victory over King's College in game five of the NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional at Rose-Hulman on Thursday. Charlie Edwards opened the ninth with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Chris Martin. Brandon Mauck snapped the tie with a single to left to make the score 3-2, then Tyler Rudman added another run with an RBI single to center field. The inning continued with a walk to Ben Titus and a hit by pitch to Chris Kovanda to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Cardinals. The final run scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Wright. The five runs made a winner out of Doug Stevens, who improved to 10-0 on the season with an eight-hitter. Stevens recorded six strikeouts and walked two in the victory. King's pitcher Caleb Calarco kept the Monarchs in the game with a strong eight innings to keep the score tied at 2-2. Calarco scattered seven hits and struck out one in the performance. Offensively, Wright had a home runs, two hits and two RBIs, while Brandon Mauck finished 2-4 with two runs scored to lead Otterbein. Nick Sorino slapped a pair of hits for Kings, while Jon Venarchick and Matt Colgan each had one hit and one RBI for the Monarchs. Otterbein improved to 30-15 on the season and squares off against Wooster at 5 p.m. today. King's completed its first trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 25-16 season. |
