TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Seventh-seeded Elizabethtown College scored four runs in the 10th inning to defeat No. 2 seed Otterbein College 7-3 in the NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional at Rose-Hulman on Wednesday. Elizabethtown rallied from a 3-2 ninth-inning deficit to force extra innings with a leadoff solo home run by Dean Whetham. Otterbein had an opportunity to win in the bottom of the ninth, but second baseman Adam Sheibley threw out potential winning run Mike Griffin to from shallow center field to end the ninth. In the 10th, Elizabethtown slapped four hits and scored four runs to earn their first NCAA Division III Tournament victory since 2001. Sheibley opened the rally with a one-out single and advanced to second when Ryan White was hit by a pitch. Jon Kalejta then drove home two runs with a double to left center field. Following a Brandon Watson single to right field, Jared Auman capped the frame with a two-run double down the right field line to secure the final margin of victory. Whetham finished 3-4 in the game with two runs scored and a home run, while Kalejta was 2-5 with four RBIs, a double and a triple to lead Elizaebthtown. Ben Titus led Otterbein's 14-hit attack with three singles. Kyle Dyar added a home run, while Jerry Tulga, Kyle Dyar and Chris Martin had two hits each for the Cardinals. On the mound, Matt Woehnker tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win and improve to 3-2. Tyler Hoffman tossed the first 8 2/3 innings for Elizabethtown, scattering 12 hits and allowing three earned runs. For Otterbein, Bobby Wright threw a strong eight innings in the no-decision, allowing five hits and two runs. Elizabethtown improved to 26-14-1 on the season, while Otterbein dropped to 29-15. Elizabethtown returns to action at 1 p.m. on Thursday, while Otterbein plays again at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. |
