Coach Jenkins Earns 400th Rose-Hulman Win in Victory over Concordia
TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Head baseball coach Jeff Jenkins earned his 400th victory at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology as the Engineers defeated Concordia University (Ill.) 11-1 on Saturday at Art Nehf Field. Junior Matt Pepelea (Terre Haute/South) tied a career-high and set a team season-high with six RBIs to lead the Engineer offense. Pepelea slapped a three-run double in the eighth inning and added a two-run single in the sixth to highlight the day. Sophomore Michael Matsui (Joliet, Ill.) led the Engineers with his 7 1/3 innings of work to improve to 2-1 on the season. Matsui scattered seven hits and recorded four strikeouts in the win. Sophomore Sam Deters (Teutopolis, Ill.) pitched out of a bases loaded, one out jam without allowing a run in the eighth inning to secure the victory. Offensively, senior Jeremy Hochstedler (Noblesville) added a pair of doubles for the Engineers. Senior Josh Nash (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and junior Adam Knaack (McHenry, Ill.) each contributed a pair of hits, including a double, for Rose-Hulman. Jenkins improved his career Rose-Hulman record to 400-246-1 and now stands 445-311-2 in his NCAA Division III coaching career. Rose-Hulman broke the game open with a three-run sixth inning, to turn a 2-0 lead into a 5-0 advantage. Junior Matt Salisbury (Fort Wayne/Homestead) opened the frame with a hit by pitch, and advanced to second on a walk to junior Tim Braun (Evergreen Park, Ill.). Junior Kellen Hurst (Noblesville) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, then Pepelea brought home both runners with a line drive single to right field. Following a stolen base by Pepelea, sophomore Gabe Focke (St. Leon) drove home the final run of the frame with an RBI single. Rose-Hulman added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings, on a fielder's choice by Pepelea and a single by junior Jimmy Murray (Gahanna, Ohio). Pepelea then smashed his three-run double, before Hochstedler drove in another run with a two-bagger. Rose-Hulman improved to 8-7 on the season, while Concordia dropped to 6-7. The Engineers and Cougars complete their three-game series with a twinbill at Art Nehf Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. |
