Suros Surgical Systems, client company of Rose-Hulman Ventures, was honored with a Mira Award presented by TechPoint on May 16, 2003 in Indianapolis. Suros won the award in the category of Health and Life Sciences Company. To qualify, nominees must derive the majority of its revenue from the sale of products or services in the health & life sciences industry. The winner should demonstrate innovative health-related products or services, company financial strength and overall success. Key considerations are profitability, sustainability, impact on the industry and market, and accomplishments as an outstanding corporate citizen.

Jim Pearson, CEO of Suros Surgical Systems, commented on the recognition, “Suros is honored to be among Indiana’s leading organizations recognized for its advanced technology and the impact that technology has on women’s healthcare. While the Mira Award finds a home in the Suros corporate office, we share its significance and the honor of receiving it with the great engineering minds at Rose- Hulman Ventures. Without the talents of Rose-Hulman Ventures thought-leaders and the assistance of the institution’s nationally recognized business incubation program, Suros could not have positioned itself so quickly as a strong market competitor.”

Suros Surgical Systems, Inc. is an Indiana-based medical device manufacturer setting new industry standards for minimally invasive methods of tissue excision and biopsy within multiple surgical specialties. Its patented ATEC™ (Automated Tissue Excision and Collection) breast biopsy and excision system has made exciting new clinical advancements in the areas of vacuum assisted diagnostic breast biopsy. Suros is the only company in the world with a commercially available MRI-guided vacuum assisted breast biopsy system that allows women in a high-risk population the opportunity for early breast disease diagnosis without going to surgery.

The ATEC™ system provides a fully automated, minimally invasive approach to biopsy and tissue collection that is faster, safer, easier, more clinically advanced, and more economically smart than other market options. With the average procedure time taking less than one minute and a smaller needle diameter than competing products, the ATEC™ system offers women the most efficient and most compassionate choice for breast biopsy and excision.

Jim Eifert, president of Rose-Hulman Ventures said, “Suros is an excellent example of the kind of new companies Indiana needs and that Indiana can generate. They have transformative technology, excellent leadership and management, and a very experienced, knowledgeable board of directors and advisors.” Eifert added, “We expect even greater things from them.”

Rose-Hulman Ventures provided the entrepreneurial firm with technical expertise, lab space, business planning, and venture capital.
