Year: |
2008 Graduate |
| Hometown: |
Fort Collins, Colorado |
| Major: |
Civil Engineering |
| Minor: |
Economics (Additionally, I am pursuing Management Studies and Consulting Engineering Certificates.) |
| Favorite Class: |
My favorite class at Rose has been Concrete Design II with Dr. Aidoo. |
| Why?: |
I really enjoyed the material that we covered in the class and the best part was the laboratory experiments. We were able to design, construct, and test several
concrete beams to failure so that we could reinforce the concepts learned in class. I have had many classes at Rose that were great, but this one is my favorite so far. |

That experience was awesome, something really exciting for a young engineer still in school. It was an experience I didn’t think I’d have as a sophomore in college, one I wouldn’t have had at another
school.

Parsons Brinckerhoff
|
|
Position:
|
Bridge Design Intern
|
|
Dates:
|
6/07 to 8/07
|
|
Description:
|
- Completed preliminary design of a four-span arched steel pedestrian bridge in Denver using a structural analysis – this involved applying appropriate loads to the structure, sizing members, and evaluating
multiple scenarios to determine the critical failure mode for design.
- Performed preliminary engineering research and quantity calculations for the Columbia River Crossing Bridge for a unique bridge alternative – we were evaluating putting light rail or a bus rapid transit lane
through the concrete box section of the bridge (dubbed ‘transit in a box option’). This design is rare and there are only two bridges in the world that we found that use this system. It was only one alternative
of many and probably wasn’t the selected bridge design but it was good experience.
- Became acclimated with several codes and specifications including AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specs, Guide Specs for Design of Pedestrian Bridges and ASCE 7-05: Minimum Design Loads

Yes. Bridge design is definitely not something you’ll see from start to finish in one summer. But you’ll get to see a part of it. I was lucky to see the beginning, which is probably the best part
for a young engineer to see.

“We have students on campus where, when they graduate, you’re happy they’re graduating. But you’re really sad you won’t be seeing them everyday. And Matt’s going to be one of those.”
Kevin Sutterer, Rose-Hulman professor and ASCE advisor

“He’s great at time management. He’s disciplined. He’s focused and he’s really solid at understanding priorities. Here’s a guy who’s just a fabulous role model and the sooner we can get him
out mentoring kids, the better the impact for those kids.”
Brad Hauter, soccer head coach

“Any person could walk up to Matt and get a smile from him. He’s always in a good mood, like he woke up on the right side of the bed every day.”
Trey Buck, soccer co-captain
