Information

Activities:

Women’s basketball, starting center, one varsity letter; Women’s track, triple jump and 4-x-100 relay, one varsity letter; National Society of Black Engineers; Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity member.

Interests:

activities, reading and hanging out with friends.

Favorite Music:

Rhythm & Blues. However, I like everything. I have more than 250 songs on my mp3. I like to listen to Rap music before a basketball game. It seems to get me in the right mood for the game.

Favorite Books:

Recently I have read many murder mystery novels. I like the twists and turns in the story, and trying to solve the mystery before reading the final page.

Favorite TV Shows:

With everything I’m doing on campus, I don’t have much time for watching television.

Favorite Movies:

Anything except horror movies.

Most Inspirational Person:

Dr. Ben Carson, a world-renown pediatric neurosurgeon from the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He carries a message of hope for and faith in the human spirit and the remarkable ability of the human brain. One of his favorite sayings is “We can take charge of our own lives.” My father gave me a book about Dr. Carson during high school.

Why Rose-Hulman?

Simply, it’s the best. It’s very challenging. I knew that it was going to be hard. You learn everything you need, and more, so that you’re ready when you go out and put everything into practice. I also like the small campus. It’s a community where everyone knows your name. There is a lot of help around. Everyone wants you to succeed. When I needed it, I went to tutoring sessions in Percopo (Residence) Hall. It’s not hard for me to ask for help . . . Rose-Hulman seemed to be the best fit for me. All of the places I examined for basketball either didn’t have biomedical engineering or didn’t have a strong emphasis on academics. I wanted a college where I could both – athletics and academics, while also being able to experience life. Here, school work is No. 1. That’s why I’m here.

Life at Rose-Hulman

Yes, Rose-Hulman is a lot of work, but we have fun, too. Everyone is working hard. You help each other. I have moments, like everyone else, when I get tired. However, I know it is worth it. With the services that Rose-Hulman provides, you can’t go wrong. Also, I know that I’m learning how to handle similar stressful situations when I leave Rose-Hulman.

Why Biomedical Engineering?

I always enjoyed learning about the human body and mechanics. Biomedical engineering is the best of both worlds. As a biomedical engineer you have the ability to help a lot of people, while a doctor helps just one person at a time.

Being a Student-Athlete at Rose-Hulman

There isn’t a lot of time to do other things and there isn’t a lot of time during holiday breaks for long trips to visit family and friends back home. Time management is a key issue during basketball season. Personally, playing sports helps keep me focused. There’s only so much time and I have to take advantage of every minute that’s available. It helps me be more organized. Realistically, I feel lost when the season is over. It seems like I have so much time. I tend to let things lapse. Then, all of a sudden everything piles up and I’m stressed all over again.

Quotables

  • “Yes, the winters are cold and it took a while getting used to the temperatures and snow. Realistically, I was so naïve. I didn’t even bring a coat with me to college. Then, on the first snowfall, I thought ‘Classes Are Going to be Cancelled, Right?’ Boy, was I wrong! I survived, basically, by pulling up the hood on my coat and walking quickly – very quickly -- between campus buildings.”

  • “People think that I’m shy, but I’m not really quiet. I’m a fun person that wants to enjoy life with my friends. I don’t say something unless it has to be said.”

  • “If you’re in good company, almost anything can be fun. I would like to think I’m friends with anybody.”

Notables

  • Older sister, Dionne, is the all-time leading scorer in University of New Mexico women’s basketball history with 1,913 points. She was a four-time all-Mountain West Conference selection (2005-08), named the MWC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player three times and nominated by the MWC for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

  • On her own behalf, Donna earned honorable mention all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors and was named to the five-player conference all-freshman team. She led the team in scoring (9.7 points per game) and rebounding (7.4 rebounds per game), and established a school record with 58 blocked shots.
