NIF has begun experiments that focus the
energy of 192 giant laser beams on a
BB-sized target filled with hydrogen fuel.
NIF's goal is to fuse the hydrogen atoms'
nuclei and produce net energy gain – the
same fusion energy process that makes the
stars shine and provides the life-giving
energy of the sun. As NIF experiments lead
us towards ignition in 2010 there are new
opportunities for excellent talent to enter
and help move the program into the next
phase.
The successful
candidate will be an employee of Akima
Infrastructure Services, a premier
government contractor at the Laboratory that
partners with the Lab by finding motivated
and well qualified candidates to support the
success of their mission. Per Akima’s

module) capacitor bank modules used to power
the large flash lamps in the NIF
solid-estate laser amplifiers. The PEPC
system employs high voltage electronics and
sophisticated controls hardware and software
to implement an optical switch topology for
the 192 beams of the NIF main laser. These
systems include: high voltage power
supplies, pulsed power hardware and
circuits, analog and digital controls
hardware and software, embedded computers
and diagnostics. Primary interactions will
be with the lead operators, shot directors,
system mangers and electrical engineering
support personnel.
Due to the vast and
varying types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7
operational facility. This position may
require the Maintenance Technician to have
the flexibility to work overtime, shift and
