The position requires knowledge of optical physics and illumination system design & manufacture. The candidate should display expertise in non-imaging refractive & reflective optical/photometric design, product development and test/measurement related to illumination systems. The individual should be familiar with various light source technologies, i.e. solid state (LEDs, OLEDs, laser diodes), plasma, high intensity discharge (HID), xenon, fluorescent, incandescent, etc. 

In this position the Principal Optical Engineer will:

  • Work, with project level design authority for optical technologies, across multiple aircraft lighting product lines (interior, exterior, electro-mechanical), in the design, modeling & analysis of illumination systems &/or components using derivative & new technologies.
  • Participate in characterization & validation testing of lighting mock-ups, prototypes, engineering development units, components & systems.
  • Meet performance, cost & schedule requirements; i.e. design to cost, manufacturability, reliability, testability, maintainability, etc.
  • Engage in the investigation, characterization and testing of new lighting technologies, optical components & systems.
  • Participate in assessment, selection & support of relevant suppliers, vendors & their products.
  • Interface with customers regarding photometric/optical requirements & specifications of lighting products.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Eight years (minimum) experience in illumination engineering & the design of lighting systems, preferably in aerospace lighting.

Superconducting Accelerator Operator

The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University (MSU)

is searching for a superconducting accelerator operator within the Operations department. NSCL is

a national user facility pENTroviding world-class rare isotope beams to scientists from all over the world. As an accelerator operator you will

(1) operate two superconducting cyclotrons, a superconducting linac, beam transport lines, and maintain the tune of two ion sources;
(2) develop cyclotron beam tunes for new isotope beams and work on the improvement of cyclotron equipment and control programs;
(3) monitor the facility status of major equipment including cryogenics systems, high-power RF transmitters, and vaccuum systems;
(4) perform and assist in preventive maintenance and repair of accelerator and beam transport systems; and
(5) assist researchers in setting up and performing experiments.

Required Experience:

Successful candidates will receive extensive on-the-job training, along with the opportunity to attend accelerator physics classes at the US particle accelerator school. You should have about one year experience in any of the following areas: accelerators, ion optics, electronics, computer programming, mass spectrometers, and vacuum systems.

 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This opportunity is at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and Photon Science Laboratory (https://lasers.llnl.gov) located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (www.llnl.gov) in Livermore, CA.  The world's largest and highest-energy laser, the National Ignition Facility (NIF), was dedicated in May 2009. NIF has begun experiments that focus the energy of 192 giant laser beams on a BB-sized target filled with hydrogen fuel. NIF's goal is to fuse the hydrogen atoms' nuclei and produce net energy gain – the same fusion energy process that makes the stars shine and provides the life-giving energy of the sun. As NIF experiments lead us towards ignition in 2010 there are new opportunities for excellent talent to enter and help move the program into the next phase.  

The successful candidate will be an employee of Akima Infrastructure Services, a premier government contractor at the Laboratory that partners with the Lab by finding motivated and well qualified candidates to support the success of their mission. Per Akima’s contract the candidate must be able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals for the position, a drug screen, a background investigation under clearance requirements from the Department of Energy, and the successful candidate must be a US citizen and at least 18 years of age. The employee will take day to day work direction from a Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC (prime Laboratory contractor to DOE) technical personnel. Pay, benefits and Human Resources activities will be provided by Akima (physically located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) a subcontractor to LLNS. 

The successful candidate will operate the Power Conditioning System (PCS) and the Plasma-Electrode Pockels Cell (PEPC) systems through the high level computer control system following detailed procedures. The PCS employs one hundred ninety two high voltage (24 KV), high-energy (1.7 MJ per module) capacitor bank modules used to power the large flash lamps in the NIF solid-estate laser amplifiers. The PEPC system employs high voltage electronics and sophisticated controls hardware and software to implement an optical switch topology for the 192 beams of the NIF main laser.  These systems include: high voltage power supplies, pulsed power hardware and circuits, analog and digital controls hardware and software, embedded computers and diagnostics. Primary interactions will be with the lead operators, shot directors, system mangers and electrical engineering support personnel. 

Due to the vast and varying types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7 operational facility. This position may require the Maintenance Technician to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekend work to accomplish goals. (This position may also require working alternate schedules such as 4/10’s or 12 hour shifts) Due to the complexity of the Laboratory, the successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments. 

Essential Duties

-Operate the PCS and PEPC systems through the high level computer control system following detailed procedures.

-Provide real-time diagnosis of system performance problems during shot operations (often under time pressure) by utilizing control system status, warning messages and diagnostic waveforms.

-Provide accurate documentation of problems to effect immediate repairs or pass down for next shift.

-Troubleshoot, repair and maintain the HV and control systems using oscilloscopes, computer-based diagnostics, multi-meters and other diagnostic tools.

Extensive functional experience working as part of a team in R&D development efforts in product, process and equipment development.

Preference will be given to the candidate with 2-3 years experience in optical thin films process development, for plastic optics.  Ideal candidate has experience in Ion/Plasma coating technology processes in such industries as Semiconductor (visible light products) or precision optics, with experience in PVD, CVD, Hybrid, IAD/IBAD, Plasma Enhanced, etc. and organic coating processes.

Ophthalmic experience a plus, but not required.

The Sr Mgr Lens Product Development & Enablement has primary responsibility for lens design / qualification, accurate and timely transfer of technical information and lens product integration within Retail, and coordinate related activities with Lens Merchandising and Lens Sourcing.  Also serves as an optical technical resource expert in lens product development and enablement and a resource for lens design review for Retail.   

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Serves as the primary optical technical resource for manufacturing, including changes, updates, and problem resolution associated with the aspects of lenses and related processes. 

 Manages the timely and accurate recording and sharing of lens data throughout supply chain systems and production lab management systems.

Superconducting Accelerator Operator

The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University (MSU) is searching for a superconducting accelerator operator within the Operations department. NSCL is a national user facility providing world-class rare isotope beams to scientists from all over the world. As an accelerator operator you will 1) operate two superconducting cyclotrons, a superconducting linac, beam transport lines, and maintain the tune of two ion sources; (2) develop cyclotron beam tunes for new isotope beams and work on the improvement of cyclotron equipment and control programs; 3) monitor the facility status of major equipment including cryogenics systems, high-power RF transmitters, and vaccuum systems; (4) perform and assist in preventive maintenance and repair of accelerator and beam transport systems; and (5) assist researchers in setting up and performing experiments.

Required Experience:

Successful candidates will receive extensive on-the-job training, along with the opportunity to attend accelerator physics classes at the US particle accelerator school. You should have about one year experience in any of the following areas: accelerators, ion optics, electronics, computer programming, mass spectrometers, and vacuum systems.
