WHAT IS ILL?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) allows the Logan Library to fill your requests to borrow books and obtain copies of articles from other U.S. lending libraries. ILL can only be used when the needed books and articles are not in the Logan Library’s collections (not owned or are lost/missing). ILL cannot be used to borrow textbooks needed for class.  Remember to check the library catalog and Journal Finder to check the availability of needed items prior to putting in an ILL request.

HOW DO I SUBMIT REQUESTS?
There are three ways to submit ILL requests.

  1. Online ILL forms for article and book requests.
  2. ILL forms are available at the Circulation Desk. These forms can be attached to the front of any printouts. Fill out the information in the upper right hand corner.
  3. Copy/Printout from a database search or bibliography from an article or book. Highlight needed sources and put name and campus box # on the page [if multiple pages please staple together].

WHAT WILL IT COST ME?                                                                                                                                                     USUALLY NOTHING! Logan Library pays up to $10 per request (within reason on articles). HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY ILL REQUESTS?                                                                                               Articles can be received in one to five class days. You will receive an e-mail from the Logan Library with a PDF attachment for each requested article.

Books can take from four to seven class days. You will be notified via email that your book(s) have arrived and can pick them up at the Circulation Desk.

ILL transactions are dependent on the lending library responding to our request. Slower turn-around times may exist during the lending library’s holidays and breaks.

HOW LONG CAN I BORROW THE BOOKS?
Although it can take four to seven days to receive a book, you still need to plan ahead in requesting materials.  Lending libraries determine the due dates. The Logan Library does not. Due dates can range from seven to 45 days. Pay attention to the date due posted on the front of the ILL book. You will be sent a notice the week the book is due. You can ask for a renewal unless otherwise posted on the front of the ILL book. Please ask for a renewal at least three days before the book is due. The Logan Library will not ask for any renewal after the date due since lending libraries will not grant one after the date due. Only one renewal is allowed per book. If you need the book longer, email request(s) directly to ill@rose-hulman.edu with the necessary information.

IS THERE A FEE FOR OVERDUE BOOKS?
Yes. The Logan Library charges an overdue book fee plus all fees passed along from the lending library. After the ILL book is one week overdue, the Logan Library charges $4 per overdue ILL book. The Logan Library will contact the lending library to determine the lending library’s fees (replacement fee, non-refundable processing fee, etc.) and notify you of these fees. The fees will be sent to the Business Office and posted on your account.

WHAT IF I LOSE THE BOOK OR IT IS DAMAGED OR OVERDUE?
You will be charged for any lost or damaged items. The lending library sets the fee (replacement fee, non-refundable processing fee, etc.).  You cannot purchase a replacement book for the lending library. The lending library will not negotiate their fees.

WHERE DO I RETURN ILL BOOKS?
