Smith, who also serves as the Homework Hotline’s
director, received WRTV’s Leadership Award, from evening co-anchor
Martha Weaver, and was the focus of a profile story that was broadcast
Jan. 13 on the station’s 6 p.m. newscast.
Established by Smith in 1991, the Homework Hotline
provides middle and high school students with free math and science
homework help by calling 1-877-ASK-ROSE (1-877-275-7673) from 7 p.m. to
10 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday throughout the school year. The
program reinforces mathematics and science concepts and helps students
develop better problem-solving skills. Homework Hotline callers speak to
Rose-Hulman students who have been trained to tutor students in grades
6-12. A total of 120 Rose-Hulman students serve as tutors, with no more
than 30 being on call each night. Tutors have access to most
state-adopted math and science textbooks.
A total of 39,835 callers were helped by the Homework
Hotline during the 2004-05 school year, and has already topped 22,000
calls this school year. The service receives calls from every Indiana
county.
"We make sure our students don't give answers but work
with the student so they understand the concept," says Smith, telling
WRTV that she enjoys the program because callers find it helpful.
"We work as a team and we all share that same passion of
helping people, so it's great to be able to come to work and know that
you're helping someone every single day."
The Homework Hotline is supported by Rose-Hulman, Lilly
Endowment, Inc. and 3-M Corporation.
WRTV’s Leadership Award rewards people in communities
that are making their neighborhoods enjoyable places to live and to
share their positive stories with the station’s central Indiana viewers.
The weekly award recipient is selected by a station committee.
Smith, a member of the Rose-Hulman faculty since 1987,
is no stranger to receiving honors for helping others and the community.
She has received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from Gov. Frank
O’Bannon, Terre Award from the Greater Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce
for outstanding community service and Rose-Hulman President’s
Outstanding Service Award. She is a former member of the Board of
Directors of Leadership Terre Haute and the Council of Domestic Abuse,
and currently serves on the Vigo County Historical Society Board. She is
also a member of the Union Hospital Service League, Unity Presbyterian
Church and PEO.
