Schultz, a native of Fort Wayne, was one of only 35 Fellows named from 217 applicants for graduate fellowships in 2008-09. The honor is based on high scholarship, campus leadership and service, and promise of future contributions to the engineering profession.
Besides majoring in mechanical engineering, Schultz has also earned minor academic designations in Spanish and mathematics, while maintaining a near perfect 3.98 grade point average (out of 4.0).
At Rose-Hulman, Schultz has served as news editor of the campus’ weekly newspaper, Rose Thorn, earning awards for writing and page layout from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association. He has also been a tutor for the college’s Homework Hotline, a toll-free mathematics and science tutoring service that helps Indiana middle school and high school students understand mathematics and science; been treasurer of Rose-Hulman’s Tau Beta Pi chapter; and a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta, Pi Mu Epsilon and Pi Tau Sigma honor fraternities.
Schultz has augmented his academic work with internships at Cummins Inc. in Columbus, Ind., as part of the company’s Chrysler Performance Engineering division, which is responsible for the development and improvement of the Cummins diesel engine in Dodge Ram pickup trucks. He spearheaded a crucial safety test as well as designed, wrote and implemented a data analysis program to help speed-up acquisition-to-analysis time.
After another summer at Cummins, Schultz will spend the next two years at Purdue in pursuit of a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. He will be working at Herrick Laboratories in research in regards to the performance of the diesel particulate filter after treatment system that is attached to the Cummins 6.7L product.
Schultz admits that his career goals are still undecided. His dream jobs would be serving as an Imagineer for Disney, working for Apple Computer or starting his own company.
