First-Year Scholars, Shirley Bright Honored at Parents’ Association Moms’ Day Dinner

Twenty-two students who completed their first year (2004-05) at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a perfect 4.0 grade point average joined Institute First Lady Shirley Bright in being honored by the Parents’ Association at its Mom’s Day Dinner on March 25.

Mom's Day 2006 Photo Highlights

The Parents’ Association presented engraved letter openers to the following students for academic achievement: Alexander Clerc, an electrical engineering major from Columbus, Ind.; Samantha Dick, a biomedical engineering major from Fort Wayne, Ind.; Aaron Gerhardstein, a mechanical engineering major from Fort Wayne; Amanda Grantz, a chemical engineering major from Rapid City, S.D.; Timothy Karwoski, a computer engineering major from Defiance, Mo.; Megan Knilands, an optical engineering major from Paxton, Ill.; Nathaniel Lindle, a computer science major from Cincinnati, Ohio; Devin Love, an electrical engineering major from Mooresville, Ind.; Katie Maggard, a chemical engineering major from Floyds Knobs, Ind.; Andrew Maxwell, a mechanical engineering major from Kingston, N.Y.; and Bradley Munchel, a chemical engineering major from Brookville, Ind.

Also honored were Nicholas Ohrn, a mechanical engineering major from Gary, Ind.; Adam Outcalt, a computer science major from Cincinnati, Ohio; Kimiko Parker, an electrical engineering major from Madeira, Ohio; Jason Rodzik, a computer science major from Marietta, Ga.; Ian Rogers, a mathematics major from Freeburg, Ill.; Ian Ross, a physics major from Ballwin, Mo.; Scott Ruskamp, a computer engineering major from Dodge, Neb.; Ryan Schultz, a mechanical engineering major from Fort Wayne; Brian Thompson, an electrical engineering major from Gloucester, Va.; Chastity Williams, a mechanical engineering major from Farmersburg, Ind.; and Sara Zenner, a chemical engineering major from Gurnee, Ill.

Shirley Bright received the Joy Hulbert Award, which recognizes a woman who has had a positive influence on Rose-Hulman and played an important role in students’ education. Bright is the wife of Robert Bright, chairman of the board of trustees, who has served as the college’s chief executive officer this fiscal year. The couple moved from their home in Austin, Texas, to help lead Rose-Hulman during the transition of presidential leadership.

"We’re very thankful to Shirley Bright for all that she has done to support Rose-Hulman during this school year," stated Rose-Hulman Parents’ Association Co-Chair Bev Viles. "Mrs. Bright has joined her husband in expressing concern and friendship to Rose-Hulman students, parents, faculty and staff members. She has become actively involved in the campus community and is a wonderful ambassador for Rose-Hulman with alumni and the Terre Haute community."

More than 450 parents and students attended the Mom’s Day Dinner in the Vonderschmitt Dining Room of the Hulman Union.
