Rose-Hulman News 1 Ksiazek Claims First Place in Freshman Math Competition
Rose-Hulman
Casimir Ksiazek captured first place honors in the 18th Alfred R. Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Competition, which tested students’ problem-solving skills on six challenging problems over a two-hour testing period earlier during this academic quarter. Awards were presented on Oct. 7 during the college’s homecoming festivities.

Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Competition. Winners included Casimir Ksiazek (right), first place; Anirudh Narayaran (second from left), second place; and Tyler Gonnsen (left), third place. Not pictured is Michael Nguyen, who also tied for second.

Ksiazek is an electrical engineering major from Justice, Ill. He received a book, a copy of Math Horizons and a cash prize.

Tying for second place honors were Anirudh Narayaran, a computer engineering major from Bangalore, and Michael Nguyen, a chemical engineering major from Suglar Land, Texas. Each student received a book, a copy of Math Horizons and a cash prize.

Third place honors went to Tyler Gonnsen, a software engineering major from Maquoketa, Iowa. He received a copy of Math Horizons and a cash prize.

Meritorious mention honors were given to Mark Brugioni, David Loughry and John-Paul Verkamp. Earning honorable mention honors were Andrew Anderson, Katherine Kragh, Jeremy Schendel and Arnold Yim.

A total of 19 students participated in this year’s contest. The problems were compiled by Rose-Hulman Mathematics Professor John Rickert. Grading the tests were professors Kurt Bryan, Bill Butske, David Finn, Joshua Holden and Rickert.

The competition helps the Department of Mathematics identify students that might be interested in representing Rose-Hulman later this school year in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition and Mathematical Contest in Modeling. The competition was started in 1989 to honor of Schmidt, who served as a mathematics professor at Rose-Hulman from 1949-95.
