Mathematics Team Captures State Title

Three Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology students showcased their problem solving skills to help lead the college to first-place honors in the 2006 Indiana Collegiate Mathematics Competition. The competition was conducted March 18 during the Mathematical Association of America's Indiana section meeting at Taylor University.

Hail To The Victors: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology students Stephen Dupal, Robert Lemke-Oliver and Hari Ravindran were recognized after winning the 2006 Indiana Collegiate Mathematics Competition. The trio was the only team -- out of 35 competitors -- to earn points on all eight problems.

This marks the third time in the past six years that a Rose-Hulman team has captured top honors in the state contest.

Scoring 70 out of a possible 80 points in the contest was the team of Stephen Dupal, a senior computer engineering major from Westlake, Ohio; Robert Lemke-Oliver, a freshman mathematics major from Madison, Wis.; and Hari Ravindran, a junior mathematics major from Doha. The squad was the only team to earn points on all eight problems.

There were 35 teams in the competition. A team of Purdue University students placed second, with 69 points, while a Ball State team finished third, with 62 points.

Rose-Hulman’s No. 2 team placed fifth with 43 points. The team consisted of senior John Beety, and juniors Adam Outcalt and Angela Smiley.

Other Rose-Hulman students participating in the contest were junior Ted Lyman, and sophomores Ian Rogers and Ely Spears.

John Rickert, associate professor of mathematics, coordinated Rose-Hulman’s participation in the competition.
