Terre Haute South Students
Once Again Showcase Math Skills by Winning Rose-Hulman Math Contest
The margin of victory may be getting closer, but Terre Haute South High
School students keep solving enough challenging mathematics problems to
outscore the competition on Saturday, Nov. 12, in Rose-Hulman Institute
of Technology’s annual high school mathematics contest, which is one of
the largest of its kind in the Midwest.

Terre Haute South won the contest for the seventh straight year,
dominating the senior and freshman class divisions. The school also
placed second in the junior division and was third among juniors. That
consistency was enough to pull out a 61-point victory over Carmel High
School in the overall rankings. Park Tudor of Indianapolis was third.
“Our students care about math a lot and they’re very talented,” stated
South Mathematics Teacher Mona Sternfeld, the team’s coach. “The
students take great pride in this competition. They want to do well each
year.”
Approximately 400 scholars from 26 high schools in Indiana, Illinois
and Iowa had one hour to complete 20 questions in a wide range of
mathematics categories.
Class division winners included:
- Seniors: Justin Yi of the Indiana Academy for Science,
Mathematics and Humanities (Muncie) tied with Fan Huang of Urbana
(Ill.) High School for first place. Kate Goeller of Terre Haute
South shared second-place honors with Sam Claus of Iowa City West
(Iowa).
- Juniors: Terre Haute South’s Susan Hu tied Jeffrey Chenhall of
Iowa City West for top individual honors. Nathan Biberdorf of
Oakhaven Christian Academy was second.
- Sophomores: Tyler Zou of Carmel and Matthew Croop of
Indianapolis North Central shared top honors. E.G. Wright of Terre
Haute South and John Zhong of Carmel tied for second place. Zou and
Croop joined Emma Park of Covenant Christian School of Indianapolis
in receiving book prizes as the top male and female students in the
division. The awards were in memory of Mary Rhein, a teacher who
coordinated a mathematics competition in West Chester, Ohio, for
several years that used test questions developed by Rose-Hulman
faculty.
- Freshmen: David Benjamin, a homeschooled student from West
Lafayette, won the division with the only perfect 100-point score on
this year’s exam. Pardha Ponugoti of Terre Haute South was second.
Benjamin joined Curie Ahn of Iowa City West and Yingxue Li of Carmel
in receiving book prizes as the top male and female students in the
division. The awards were provided in memory of Sally Shonk, a
former Vigo County teacher.
This year's book prizes were “Mathematical Journeys,” by Peter
Schumer; “A History of Mathematics,” by Victor Katz; “A Passion for
Mathematics,” by Clifford Pickover, and “Prime Numbers,” by David Wells.

coordinate the contest, with test questions compiled by professor
emeritus Herb Bailey. Other professors assisting are Ghan Bhatt, Allen
Broughton, Bill Butske, Steve Galinaitis, Ken McMurdy, Brian Martensen
and Virginia Naibo, while Mathematics Department Secretary Terri Moscan
organized registration. Members of Rose-Hulman's Pi Mu Epsilon
mathematics honor society assisted with grading the tests.
