Rose-Hulman
Institute
of
Technology
has
started
a
six-week
leadership
academy
to
provide
undergraduate
students
in
mathematics,
science
and
engineering
with
skills
necessary
to
become
more
effective
leaders
in
technology-based
businesses,
and
more
civic-minded
in
their
careers
and
communities.
The
program,
with
15
students
in
the
first
year,
expands
the
college’s
recent
educational
initiatives
which
place
emphasis
on
educating
a
generation
of
leaders
that
are
prepared
to
address
the
challenges
and
opportunities
of
this
century
within
a
unique
context
that
includes
technology
expertise
and
proficiency
in
leadership.
Students
attend
half-day
educational
sessions
through
July
22.
The
academy
curriculum
will
focus
on
generating
confidence
in
leadership
abilities;
becoming
conscious
of
various
leadership
approaches;
connecting
students
with
leadership
resources
and
mentors;
and
developing
civic
awareness
and
responsibility.
Participants
will
benefit
from
interaction
with
industry
leaders
and
leadership
experts
from
other
Indiana
colleges
and
universities.
Students
in
the
inaugural
academy
class
were
selected
based
on
their
interests
in
leadership.
Areas
of
technical
expertise
include
computer
science,
core
fields
of
engineering
and
biomedical
sciences.
The
students
bring
a
diverse
range
of
experience
to
the
program,
including
military
service,
civic
engagement,
student
club
leadership
and
strong
academic
performance.
“We
are
fortunate
to
have
some
of
the
most
talented
technical
minds
in
the
country
walk
our
halls.
For
years,
Rose-Hulman
graduates
have
quickly
elevated
to
leadership
positions
within
their
organizations
and
communities.
Anything
we
can
do
to
jumpstart
the
success
of
these
graduates
once
they
reach
those
leadership
positions
is
central
to
Rose-Hulman’s
strategic
vision,”
noted
Julia
Williams,
professor
of
English,
executive
director
of
the
Office
of
Institutional
Research,
Planning
and
Assessment
and
a
member
of
the
leadership
academy
faculty.
James
Hanson,
assistant
professor
of
civil
engineering
and
academy
co-organizer,
envisions
a
broad
impact
for
students
that
participate
in
the
academy.
“Beyond
the
individual
success
that
we
hope
to
facilitate,
the
combination
of
brilliant
scientific
and
engineering
minds
and
leadership
skills
is
truly
capable
of
impacting
our
world
in a
special
way.
We
hope
the
academy
will
expose
talents
that
may
be
hiding
within
some
of
these
students
and
prepare
them
to
use
their
skills
to
change
the
world
in a
positive
and
powerful
manner.”
Marsha
Krisenko,
a
junior
applied
biology,
molecular
biology
and
biochemistry
major,
hopes
to
utilize
skills
developed
in
the
leadership
academy
to
span
many
different
types
of
activities
throughout
her
professional
career.
“My
interest
in
this
program
goes
beyond
developing
leadership
skills
that
will
help
me
succeed
in
my
career,”
she
said.
Other
students
involved
in
the
academy
this
summer
include
