Lilly Endowment Awards
$490,000 grant to Support
Rose-Hulman Homework Hotline
Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology has been awarded a $490,000 grant from the Lilly
Endowment Inc. of Indianapolis to continue its support of the college's
Homework Hotline that provides a free mathematics and science tutoring
service to Indiana students in grades 6-12.
The Homework Hotline has received 39,835 calls since last September that
have been answered by 106 Rose-Hulman students who serve as tutors. This
year's call total has increased 35 percent over the previous year.
During the past five years, the service has received just over 116,000
calls. The Homework Hotline serves 250,000 students at schools in all 92
Indiana counties.
This is the third grant the Lilly Endowment has provided to the Homework
Hotline. The Endowment awarded a $1 million grant in 1999 to expand the
service into central Indiana school districts. In 2002, a $2.6 million
Lilly Endowment grant made it possible to complete a three-year program
to extend the Homework Hotline to every Indiana school region.
Homework Hotline Director Susan Smith said the new grant will enable the
Homework Hotline staff to sustain the existing operation of phone and
e-mail tutoring services and maintain high visibility for the Homework
Hotline brand in Indiana.
"We're grateful to the Lilly Endowment for making it possible for the
Homework Hotline to help ensure students' progress toward achieving
competency in math and science that is important for their success in
higher education and the workforce," Smith said.
The Homework Hotline began in 1991 as a community service for students
in Vigo County.
Students can access the Homework Hotline during the academic year by
calling the toll free number 1-877-ASK-ROSE between the hours of
7 p.m. and 10 p.m. EST. Questions can also be submitted to the Homework
Hotline Web site at
www.AskRose.org.
The Web site also includes resources materials and other educational
tools for teachers and students.
