Lemke-Oliver Wins Freshman Mathematics Competition

Mathematics major Robert Lemke-Oliver received first-place honors in the 17th annual Alfred R. Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Competition, a two-hour competition which had 12 students attempting to solve six challenging problems developed by faculty.

Lemke-Oliver (middle) receives the first-place award from Rose-Hulman Mathematics Professor John Rickert (left) and Curtis Rhodes, president of Rose-Hulman's Pi Mu Epsilon chapter.

Lemke-Oliver, from Madison, Wis., was recognized during the Department of Mathematics’ homecoming open house (Oct. 1). He received a book, a copy of Math Horizons and $20.

Harry Henman, a mathematics major form Muncie, Ind., placed second and Jon Gray, a physics major from La Porte, Ind., was third. Earning honorable mention honors were Bryce Borchers, Bryan Do, Kristen Parrish, Jason Sauppe and Evan Saxton.

This year’s contest problems were compiled by Rose-Hulman Mathematics Professor John Rickert and Harvard University student Scott Kominers, with assistance from mathematics professors Josh Holden and Ken McMurdy. Graders were professors Kurt Bryan, Ken McMurdy, Virginia Naibo and Rickert.

The competition was started in 1989 in honor of Schmidt, who served as a mathematics professor at Rose-Hulman from 1949-95.
