Alumnus & Trustee Jim Baumgardt Named Chairman of Medical Device Company
Rose-Hulman

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology alumnus and trustee Jim Baumgardt has been named Chairman of the Board of the neuro and spinal medical device company NICO Corporation.  He was one of the founders of the start-up company focused on precision minimally invasive tissue removal for intracranial, skull-base and spine conditions.

Baumgardt, a 1970 chemical engineering graduate, has a long history in the healthcare industry and was a key leader in the business strategy that led to the six-year growth and eventual sale of medical device maker Suros Surgical Systems, Inc., one of Indiana’s fastest growing life science companies from 2000-2006.

As Chairman of Suros Surgical Systems, Inc. and a Board member of Laserscope, Inc., Baumgardt helped both companies introduce minimally invasive technologies that would shape their respective industries.   Baumgardt has more than 30 years of health care related experience, serving in a variety of executive roles.  He started his career at Eli Lilly and Company and then served as an officer of Guidant Corporation when the company was taken public in 1994.  He was the president of the Guidant Sales Corporation and later served as president of the Guidant Foundation.

Every year, more than 200,000 people in the United States and 2 million people worldwide are diagnosed with a brain tumor.  They are the leading cause of solid tumor cancer deaths in children under the age of 20, the second leading cause of cancer deaths in male adults ages 20-29, and the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths in females ages 20-29.

"It's time technology started addressing these growing statistics of cancer and increasing the odds of survival," Baumgardt said in a news release issued by NICO.  "That's what we aim to do at NICO."
