| Best In The Nation: Past and current
officers of Rose-Hulman's Cecil Lobo student chapter of the
American Society of Civil Engineers were all smiles after
receiving the Robert Ridgway Award as the nation's top chapter.
Attending the award presentation were (from left) Cory Howell,
2004-05 chapter president; Cassidy Sutton, 2005-06 vice president;
Michael Krantz, 2005-06 secretary; and Michael Reeves, 2005-06
president. |
The award recognizes the chapter for its outstanding community
service, professional activities, campus service and chapter performance
reports.
This marks the second time that Rose-Hulman’s chapter has received this
prestigious honor.
Accepting the Ridgway Award were 2004-05 chapter president Cory
Howell; and current officers Michael Reeves, president; Cassidy Sutton,
vice president; and Michael Krantz, secretary.
Patrick Natale, ASCE executive director, cited Rose-Hulman’s chapter
for “excellence in the effective and meritorious conduct of its affairs
as a student chapter of ASCE through the ability and professional
diligence of the Chapter officers, members and faculty advisors.”
Chapter activities completed during 2004-05 included helping
construct a 900 square foot home for a West Terre Haute woman who had
become homeless following a house fire; helping the Terre Haute Boys &
Girls Club is laying out a new football field for the Vigo County Youth
Football League; raising a record $3,528 for the Terre Haute
Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund; and hosting a fund-raising golf
tournament for the Wabash Valley Habitat For Humanity organization.
Not resting on their laurels, ASCE members have provided educational
programs for local middle school and high school students interested in
learning more about civil engineering, and recently organized an
educational field trip to the Midfield Terminal Project that’s part of
the expansion of the Indianapolis International Airport.
Rose-Hulman’s ASCE chapter includes approximately 65 students. Other
chapter officers this year include Chris Hollen, treasurer; Nicole
Sanders and Lauren Hughes, community service project managers; Matt
Trowbridge, fundraising coordinator; Stuart Nash, newsletter editor;
Jake Wagle, Web page manager; and Zach Johnson and Pat Ludwig, golf
tournament coordinators.
Professor Kevin Sutterer is the chapter’s faculty adviser, while
professional contact members are Kevin Forbes, director of engineering
for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Jim McKinney, Rose-Hulman’s R.C.
Hutchins Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering.
