Retired Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology professor and alumnus Don Dekker was inducted as a Fellow of the American Society of
Engineering Education at an awards ceremony June 27 at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Fellow member status is a distinction conferred upon those who have been ASEE members for at least 10 years and have made valuable
contributions to engineering education. A Fellow Member Committee reviews nominations of candidates for Fellow status and makes recommendations
to the ASEE Board of Directors.
Dekker has served in many leadership positions with ASEE including membership on its Board of Directors. He also served as program
chair for the design division of the ASEE national conference, and as chair of the Midwest Section of ASEE. Dekker was among the speakers
at several ASEE national and regional conferences.
Dekker retired in 2001 after a 36-year teaching career as a member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering faculty at Rose-Hulman.
He taught courses in creative design, international combustion engines, thermal design and design methods.
He earned the bachelor of science of science degree in mechanical engineering from Rose Polytechnic Institute in 1961.
In 2002, the Rose-Hulman Alumni Association presented Dekker with the Honor Alumnus Award for his contributions to the college and
engineering education. He is also the recipient of the Ralph Teetor Award as an outstanding educator from SAE International, an engineering
society of professionals involved in the design, manufacture and development of land, sea, air and space vehicles.
Dekker continues his teaching on a part-time basis as an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the University of South
Florida in Tampa, Fla.
