State Champions: Winning this year’s American Society of Civil
Engineering Design Presentation Competition was the team of seniors (from

The design team featured David Caldwell of Plymouth, Ind.; Jennifer
Hardyniec of Bringhurst, Ind.; Theresa Henke of Alexandria, Ky.; Jessica
Muhlenkamp of Portland, Ind.; and Ben Zobrist of Goodfield, Ill.
The wooden covered bridge will make the canal more accessible to hikers
and other pedestrians. It will also serve as a tribute to Indiana’s
past, an attractive landmark and become a point of pride for the entire
community. The team examined structural and geotechnical aspects of the
area in its design.
This marks the 14th time in 18 years that a Rose-Hulman team has earned
top marks in the competition, which was part of the ASCE Indiana Section
meeting. Student teams presented their projects to an audience of
student peers and engineering professionals.
Department of Civil Engineering professors Jim Hanson and Sue Niezgoda
coordinated the senior design project course this year. Hanson served as
a faculty mentor to the winning teams’ project.
